Could Packers Emerge as 2019 NFL Betting Surprise

Above all Green Bay was one of the most consistent NFL betting teams since 1993. The Packers made the playoffs in all but five seasons 1993-2016. However, the wheels began to come off in a 7-9 season in 2017. That season was written off as being due to Aaron Rodgers injury. Rogers returned for the 2018 season. Yet the Pack was even worse at 6-9-1. Head coach Mike McCarthy was fired with four games to go. He departed with a 2010 Super Bowl ring after 13 seasons. Matt LaFleur takes over a team that many believe underachieved.

Slip Sliding Away

Last year Green Bay posted an NFL betting 6-9-1 vs. the line and 8-8 with totals. Offensively the Pack ranked 12th overall and 15th for scoring. While they finished ninth for passing yardage, they were 22nd for the rush. Defensively Green Bay ranked 18th overall and 22nd for points allowed. Against the pass the Packers were a respectable 12th but 22nd against the rush. As a result of all of this the Pack finished third in the NFC North.

Enter Matt Lafleur

Now taking over for McCarthy is 39-year-old Matt LaFleur. Most recently LaFleur was offensive coordinator with the Rams (2017) and Titans (2018). At Los Angeles, LaFleur’s offense was an offshore bookmaker asset. To illuminate the Rams were the top scoring team in the NFL. Quarterback Jared Goff threw for 3804 yards with 28 touchdowns under LaFleur. At Tennessee the results were much less impressive. For instance, the Titans ranks 27th for overall offense in 2018. LaFleur’s association with Rams head coach Sean McVay ultimately prevailed. NFL owners lost their minds over recruiting anyone connected to McVay last year.

Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood

Certainly, job one for LaFleur is getting on the same page with Aaron Rodgers. By all accounts Rodgers and McCarthy fell out to a destructive level last year. Although the mercurial Rodgers had a good quarterback rating of 97.6, he often failed to finish drives. Further he would call his own plays in defiance of McCarthy. Rogers 25/2 touchdown to interception ratio is fantastic. As is his 4442 yards passing in 2018. The intangible of leadership is what Green Bay needs this season.

Aaron Jones

Concurrently Aaron Jones is another potential NFL betting factor that can boost the Pack. Jones was Green Bay’s leading rusher in 2018 with 728 yards eight touchdowns. The Texas El Paso star has averaged 5.5 yards per carry in his first two pro campaigns.

Davante Adams

Overall the most impressive Packer last year could well have been Davante Adams. The six-year pro out of Fresno State had a career best 1386 yards receiving with 13 touchdowns. Most important of all he has earned Rodgers trust.

2019 Packers Summary and Outlook

By reason of a fresh voice in LaFleur expecting improvement is reasonable. If the Packers can just be respectable on defense they can return to the playoffs.
