The clock is running out on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who turns 83 on October 13. Jones wants to win a Super Bowl without the DNA of his former coach, college roommate, and teammate Jimmy Johnson. Specifically, Jones always wanted credit for all of the Cowboys’ NFL future Odds success. While Jones is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his business acumen, he is not rocking a gold jacket for his football prowess. Of major concern is that the harder Jones tries, the worse things go. Last week’s draft did not inspire much hope for 2025.

In sum, Dallas found a different way to help Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb without adding to a thin group of skill players early in the draft. The Cowboys opted to do what they do best on draft weekend. Specifically, they drafted an offensive lineman in the first round.
Accordingly, Tyler Booker is set to replace the retired Zack Martin, one of the best draft picks ever for the Jones family. Naturally, Dallas could again have one of the best offensive lines in the league. Especially with Booker joining fellow first-round selections Tyler Guyton and Tyler Smith. Also, Dallas has had success drafting cornerbacks. So that could be a good sportsbook sign for Revel, a first-round talent with injury worries.
At the onset of the draft, the Cowboys needed offensive weapons. Their running back situation is really bad. Additionally, they have nothing at receiver beyond CeeDee Lamb. Also, they needed to bolster their offensive line, which has gotten much weaker in recent years. Dallas has some defensive 2025 NFL futures issues as well. But it had to focus on strengthening the talent around Dak Prescott.
Jerry Jones didn’t get the memo that his team was devoid of play-making talent outside of CeeDee Lamb. Consider that he failed to secure a skill player until the fifth round, and he didn’t draft a single receiver. Additionally, Jones had the top tight end in the draft fall to him at No. 12. Instead, he opted for a guard who was expected to be chosen in the 20s.
Although Tyler Booker provided no value with the 12th pick, the Cowboys were able to land some underrated talent on Day 2. Dallas was able to fill some needs on defense. Also, Jaydon Blue, chosen in the fifth round, could emerge as the starting running back, thanks to his game-breaking speed.
To summarize, the Cowboys came away with some talented prospects. However, their inability to address their top needs. Namely, failing to draft a single receiver has downgraded their overall grade.
Overall, some gambles dropped Dallas’ grade slightly this year, such as their trade of a fourth-round pick to Carolina for Jonathan Mingo. So far, that trade has not paid dividends.
