Chargers Meet Steelers in Potential NFL Bets Preview of AFC Title

Los Angeles Chargers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Following a terrible start to the season Pittsburgh had completely changed course as one of the hottest teams for NFL bets.  Yet much of that good will with gamblers was surrendered last week in a bad loss at Denver.  Concurrently it was a reminder of everything that handicappers hate and don’t trust about the Steelers.  On the other hand, the Chargers have hit their stride.  Los Angeles is one of the more consistent bets on the board lately.  Along the same lines LA is one of the better-balanced teams in the NFL.  And just a game behind Kansas City.

Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles has plenty of NFL bets momentum heading into Pittsburgh.  In fact, the Chargers have won seven of their last eight games straight up.  And have gotten the money in five of their last seven games.  LA has gone under the total in four of their last five.  Last week the Chargers plastered Arizona 45-10 for an easy home cover.  Overall LA is now 8-3 straight up, 6-5 vs. the odds, and 6-5 over the total.  Fashion the Chargers rankings of seventh for scoring offense and fourth for points allowed.   In turn that is championship level balance.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh has a sportsbook record of 7-3-1 straight up, 6-4-1 against the spread, and 6-5 over the total.  Last week’s 24-17 loss at Denver snapped a six-game winning streak both straight up and on the board.  Three of the Steelers last four games have gone under the total.  In short Pittsburgh is also showing good balance.  To illuminate the Men of Steel rank fourth for total offense and sixth for defense.  Of major concern is a ground game that ranks 27th in the NFL.  The season long holdout of Le’Veon Bell continues to cast a shadow.

Stats to Consider

Los Angeles has kept their heads above water as a road dog recently.  In fact, the Chargers have lost just three of their last nine vs. the odds getting points away from home.  Five of their last seven in that role have gone under the total.  Counter to that is the Steelers recent run at Heinz Field.  Pittsburgh has won and covered their last three games laying points at home.  And the Steelers have cleared the total in nine of their last ten in that situation.

Team vs. Team

Head to head the Chargers and Steelers have split their last six games on the board. And three of their last four meetings have gone over the total.  But at Heinz Field the Steelers have controlled the cashier’s cage.  Pittsburgh has covered the spread in five of their last seven at home vs. the Chargers.  Four of the last five between these teams in the Steel City have gone over the total.

Matchup to Watch

Granted last week was not a good look for Pittsburgh.  But the NFL bets dynamics should be in their favor here.  As has been noted the Steelers have been strong at home.  At the same time the Chargers have struggled in the Steel City.
