At the onset of camp is some promising NFL future Odds news from the Carolina Panthers. To illuminate, the only thing holding the Panthers back from an A+ offseason grade is that they didn’t make any changes to the front office or coaching staff. Instead, the Panthers made a flurry of additions via free agency and the draft to a defense that finished 2024 with terrible metrics on defense. Also, they gave Bryce Young additional help at receiver with Tetairoa McMillan after Xavier Legette earned just a 59.4 receiving grade last season on his team-leading 81 targets.

Previously, when Dan Snyder owned the Washington Commanders were known as the worst franchise in the NFL. Now that Snyder is gone, the offshore betting leader for the worst owner is David Tepper, and the worst franchise is the Carolina Panthers. But as bad as Carolina has been, things got a little bit better in 2024. Now, after a strong offseason, Carolina is being touted as a potential sleeper for the 2025 NFL Playoffs.
The Panthers could be a sleeper 2025 NFL futures playoff team with all the notable moves they made on defense. Certainly, Carolina desperately needed help after allowing a league-worst 179.8 rushing yards per game. It should be better in that area with a healthy Derrick Brown and Tershawn Wharton. Also, the Panthers gained depth on the edges. But they’re going to need immediate contributions from rookies Scourton and Umanmielen.
Carolina took advantage of a deep crop of edge rushers in the draft. To show, they bypassed defense in the first round to give Bryce Young a new weapon in No. 8 selection Tetairoa McMillan. Following a rocky rookie year and a somewhat promising second season, this could be a make-or-break season for Young. Now Young is primed for success with a stout offensive line, productive ground game, and an intriguing group of pass catchers.
Previously, it would have been on-brand for this team to pass on wide receivers in this class. Carolina claimed they’ll rely on the development of Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker. That would have been another big mistake, and Panthers fans should breathe a sigh of relief that they went another direction.
Instead, by picking the number one pure wide receiver prospect in this class, they made a huge investment at a premium position. In addition, it was also one of their biggest roster holes. McMillan also happens to fit exactly what they’re missing on the field with the current receiver corps. No draftee is a sure thing, but it would come as a surprise if McMillan can’t develop into a solid long-term starter at the least.
