For the first time since 2020 and just the second time in ten seasons, Washington made the NFL future Odds playoffs. It was the best season for the Commanders since their 1991 Super Bowl championship campaign. Of great concern to gamblers is that the Commanders were not expected to do much in 2024. But with new head coach Dan Quinn and rookie QB Jayden Daniels, the Commanders went 12-5 to shock the pro football gambling world. Now comes the question as to whether Washington can repeat the feat in 2025.

2025 Washington Commanders NFL Draft Team Preview

What an online wagering season it was in Washington. To show, Jayden Daniels and the Commanders arrived ahead of schedule in 2024. Caused by a sensational rookie campaign from Daniels that culminated in a trip to the NFC championship game.

It was the franchise’s first NFL title matchup since Joe Gibbs and Mark Rypien helmed a run to a Super Bowl title in the 1991 season. Now what, ask gamblers. Gone are the days of low expectations. Now, the Commanders might have the best quarterback in the NFC. This offseason, the task will be to ensure that the roster around Daniels is capable of building on last season’s success.

Initially, Washington took a big step in building around its quarterback by striking a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for star receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. and then trading for five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Also, the Commanders landed an accomplished veteran wideout for just a fifth-round draft pick. But they had to shell out second-round and fourth-round 2026 draft picks and third—and seventh-rounders in this upcoming draft for Tunsil.
The good 2025 NFL futures news for the Commanders is that they have plenty of flexibility with Daniels on his rookie contract. In sum, Washington has about $84 million in projected salary cap space, which is the top five in the NFL.

Namely, Jayden Daniels was a dream as a rookie. And he did it despite a supporting cast that could use some upgrades. Featured back Brian Robinson Jr. is probably league average at best. In turn, expectations have to be mitigated on the satellite back to Austin Ekeler. He enters his age-30 season. Deebo Samuel Sr. will be an addition worth watching.

Meanwhile, Terry McLaurin is an undeniable superstar. But Samuel fills a need for a dynamic WR2 on the roster. Although Zach Ertz outkicked expectations in 2024, he’s entering his age-35 season.

Washington Commanders 2025 NFL Draft Summary

Washington’s Top three needs: Edge, RB, CB. The Commanders have added defensive line depth and more quality run stoppers. However, they were interested in edge rushers Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, and DeMarcus Lawrence.

Perhaps Trey Hendrickson — and I haven’t gotten any of them to date. None of their current linemen recorded more than five sacks last season. Still, for Washington, which owns the 29th pick, the draft is deep with edge rushers.

The Commanders could also add a dynamic running back to pair with Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler. Multiple other spots could be addressed. But they could use another big-bodied physical corner to pair with Marshon Lattimore and their smaller corners (Mike Sainristil, Jonathan Jones, and Noah Igbinoghene).

Namely, Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame, is the prospect to fill a need outside Round 1. Of course, finding a big, physical cornerback in Round 2 is a chore. But Morrison could be available after suffering a hip injury in 2024. He has the size (6-foot, 190 pounds) to live at the line of scrimmage in press coverage.
