Bears Win and Cover in Week 3 MNF Over Jets

The last game of Week 3 saw the Chicago Bears 2-1 (1st NFC North) playing the New York Jets 1-2 (3rd AFC West) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Jets were favored coming into the game at -1.5 but did not come close to covering the spread.

The game started out with Chicago making several errors that included an interception and a fumble, thus the Bears took an early lead, but before the game finished the score became close, but the Bears managed a 27-19 win for Monday Night Football.

For Chicago , their QB Jay Cutler passed for 2 touchdowns; to receiver Bennett and DB Mundy returned an interception for 45 yards which was the first score of the game. QB Cutler for the game completed 23 of 38 passes for 225 yards and rushed for 14 yards on 5 carries, while receiver Jeffery had 8 receptions for 105 yards and Bennett had 5 receptions for 54 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Bears led the scoring at half time 17 to 13, with 2 touchdowns in 1st quarter and a FG in 2nd quarter, while the Jets had a FG in the 1st quarter and a TD and FG in the 2nd quarter. In the second half the Bears had a TD in 3rd quarter, and a FG in the 4th for a total of 10 points in the 2nd half. The Jets had a FG in the 3rd quarter and a FG in the 4th for a total of 6 points in the 2nd half, thus Chicago outscored the Jets 10-6 in the 2nd half.

For the Jets, their QB Geno Smith completed 26 of 43 passes for some 316 yards and 1 TD while being intercepted 2 times in the game and was fortunate not to be intercepted more, as he had other close encounters with Chicago defense. Receiver Kerley for the Jets had 7 receptions for 81 and just missed a TD reception that was tipped in the end zone in the final seconds of the game, on the Jets last drive to survive that failed.

In the first quarter with five minutes expired Chicago were already leading at 14-0 as on the Jets 2nd play of the game Mundy came out of nowhere and intercepted Jets QB Smith and went untouched for the Bears 1st TD of the game.

Then the Jets stopped the Bears on their next possession and the Bears punted and Jets rookie Saunders fumbled the punt and the Bears Dixon recovered. Then Chicago QB Cutler passed down the sideline incomplete, but the Jets were call for interference and the Bears had the ball now 1st and 10 on the Jets 7 yard line. On the third play QB Cutler his Bennett in the end zone and bumped the score to 14-0 favor of Chicago .

On the Jets next possession they had a drive of 11 plays for 55 yards capped by a 43 yard FG by Folk bringing the score to 14-3, while in the Bears following drive of 15 plays for 79 yards in the 2nd quarter they were halted by the Jets defense and Gould kicked a FG of 24 yards for Chicago who now led 17-3. The Bears got the ball back and in 8 plays went 66 yards and then Folk kicked another FG of 28 yards bringing the score to 17-6. On their next possession the Jets had a drive of 9 plays and 77 yards ending with QB Smith passing to Kerley for 19 yards and a TD as the 1st half ended with Bears 17, Jets 13.

Just before the half ended the Jets defense sacked Bears QB Cutler and he lost the ball and the Jets grabbed it and ran for a TD that was nullified as after a review because the whistle had blown before the Jets recovery.

The 2nd half of the game started with an aggressive Chicago offense driving 80 yards in six plays topped by a pass from QB Cutler to Bennett for 13 yards and a TD and the score now at 24-13 for the Bear. Then late in the 3rd the Jets drove for 24 yards in 6 plays that ended with the 3rd FG by Folk of 22 yards and now the score at 24-16. Midway through the 4th quarter the Jets drove for 41 yards on 10 plays and kicked a FG of 42 yards by Folk and the score now 24-19. The last scoring drive of the game was when the Bears drove 46 yards in 12 plays and with 3:10 left in the game Gould kicked a FG of 45 yards for the final score of Bears 27, Jets 19.

Moving on to NFL Week #4 the Chicago Bears 2-1 will play the Green Bay Packers 1-2 (3rd NFC North) in Chicago on Sunday, September 28, 2014. The Packers lost their last game to the Detroit Lions 19-7 last week at Detroit 2-1 (1st NFC North). The Jets 1-2 next week play the Detroit Lions at home.
