Bears Try to Build Around Williams for 2025 NFL Draft

Bears Try to Build Around Williams for 2025 NFL Draft.

Since losing the Super Bowl to end the 2006 season, the Chicago Bears have had only three NFL playoff appearances. The last time Chicago made the postseason was in 2020 when they went 8-8 and took advantage of the expanded wild card format. Last year, the Bears regressed to 5-12 after going 7-10 in 2023. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams began his career the same way that his predecessor, Justin Fields, did with the Bears. Once upon a time, Fields was touted as the man who would beat the NFL future Odds. Now it is Williams, although there is also skepticism.

2025 Chicago Bears NFL Draft Team Preview

On the whole, Caleb Williams’ career did not get off to a great start in Chicago. But the good news is that things can only get better. And the way the Bears have already handled this offseason, it’s trending up for him in Chicago. The Bears, who fired head coach Matt Eberflus during the season, hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to replace him. Johnson was previously one of the top candidates across the league this coaching cycle. Most importantly, he is perhaps the best possible coach to lead Williams and turn the franchise around.

Of course, Johnson has his online betting work cut out for him. There are several key areas that the Bears need to address this summer. And he has to build around Williams quickly. So, the franchise doesn’t send another quarterback out of the city like it has with the past several it has taken in the first round. The Bears have the money to make that happen. And they have three picks in the top 41 of this year’s NFL Draft. Now, Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles have to use them correctly.

Chicago Bears 2025 NFL Draft Summary

Chicago’s top three needs are OT, ED, and RB. Although the Bears have added three interior offensive linemen this offseason, drafting 10th overall is an ideal spot to land their left tackle of the 2025 NFL futures, with Braxton Jones entering a contract year.

And as general manager Ryan Poles said, a team can never have enough pass rushers. With a deep class of edge rushers and defensive tackles, Chicago could continue to add in the trenches. Despite signing Dayo Odeyingbo and Grady Jarrett. While running back isn’t the most pressing need, upgrading a key position for Ben Johnson’s offense would be a major benefit for the Bears. And with four picks in the first three rounds, they can do it.

A prospect to fill a need outside Round 1 for Chicago is Bradyn Swinson, Edge, LSU. The Bears have been aggressive in adding players to their defensive front, but that shouldn’t keep them from adding more. Swinson is a long, explosive edge rusher who has plenty of upside. Also, his hand maturity as a pass rusher and edge-setting length would give him a chance to be an early contributor.

After taking care of the offensive line, the Bears could do Caleb Williams more favors by drafting a workhorse running back. D’Andre Swift might be better suited as a No. 2 in a backfield committee. But Chicago can’t get complacent on the offensive line. Cause by the trade for guard Jonah Jackson comes with risks after he was benched most of last season during his lone year with the Rams.
