Since blowing a 25-point lead to the New England Patriots in the February 2017 Super Bowl, the Atlanta Falcons have never been the same. Atlanta has missed the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons. Now they are on their fifth head coach in that span. Raheem Morris is on his second tour of duty as the Atlanta HC. Last year, he improved the Falcons by one win in 2024. While it was a baby step, it marked progress for the NFL future odds of a franchise in desperate need of a positive sign.

At the onset of the 2025 sportsbook season, uncertainty reigns as Michael Penix takes over as the starting quarterback. Following the failure of Kirk Cousins to deliver in 2024.
In 2024, Atlanta shocked the football public. Instead of taking an edge rusher, they took a quarterback in the first round. And that was signing Kirk Cousins, the Falcons surprised again. Now, for 2025, Atlanta drafted two edge rushers in the first round this spring.
Atlanta put its 2025 NFL futures on the line by sending a 2026 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams. In turn, the Falcons went all in to select James Pearce at No. 26. That was 11 spots after taking Jalon Walker. Still, no one will care about losing a top pick if Pearce and Walker immediately improve a pass rush that has struggled in recent seasons.
Specifically, with a well-balanced roster, this could finally be the year the Falcons knock off the Buccaneers for the NFC South crown. But by prioritizing the defense in the offseason, the Falcons didn’t do much to replace Drew Dalman. Instead, Dalman joined the Chicago Bears in free agency.
Ryan Neuzil, who made eight starts last season, is in line to be Dalman’s replacement. As for another offensive concern, second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will need other playmakers to step up. Correlate that more is needed besides wide receiver Drake London and running back Bijan Robinson. Perhaps this is the year tight end Kyle Pitts breaks out as he heads into the final year of his rookie deal.
Atlanta Falcons Team History
At the beginning, the Falcons were founded as an NFL expansion team in 1966 and didn’t make the playoffs until 1978. They have two NFC championships in 1998 and 2016. Their infamous Super Bowl collapse to the Patriots is one of the biggest NFL debacles ever.
Indeed, the biggest moment in Falcon history was also its most painful. In Super Bowl LI, the Falcons had a 28-3 lead midway through the third quarter against the New England Patriots. However, Atlanta suffered a soul-crushing 34-28 loss that they have never recovered from.
