Texas A&M Survive Close Scare Against Unranked Hogs

The 6th ranked Texas A&M Aggies 5-0, 2-0 SEC (1st SEC West) played the unranked Arkansas Razorbacks 3-2, 0-2 SEC (6th SEC West). The game was played at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday, September 27th 2014 with the Aggies winning in OT 35-28.

The A&M Aggies presented their fans with a nail biter of a game that presented a real late thrill in this overtime game. At half time the Razorbacks were leading the Aggies 21 -14 and at the end of the 3rd quarter they were leading the Aggies 28 -35. The Aggies QB threw two long TD passes in the game to tie the score and put the game into OT.

No other than Johnny “Football” Manziel was at the game as his Cleveland Browns were on a bye week, as the 2012 Heisman winner saw his Aggies go to 5-0 for the first time since back in 2001. He also gave a lot of encouragement to their QB Hill who completed 21 of his 41 passes for a total of 386 yards and 4 touchdowns with 1 interception. Two Aggie receivers scored 3 touchdowns, one by Pope who had 4 receptions for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns while Reynolds had 4 receptions for 89 yards and 1 TD. Texas A&M actually trailed 28-14 until QB Hill hit Pope for a pass that went 86 yards for a TD, then Hill hit Reynolds for a 59 yard TD that tied the game with 2:08 left, and two plays later the Razorbacks missed a field goal that would have won the game. The Aggies got the ball back with 1:18 to go in regulation and not timeouts and when it came down to 4th and 18, the Aggies decided to let the time run out and move on to OT.

The Arkansas team had some crucial penalties that may have cost them the game, 1st in the 2nd quarter they had a TD pass nullified by a holding penalty on OL Skipper and in the 4th quarter a tripping penalty that erase a 55 yard run that would have placed the ball on the Aggies 3 yard line.

The Hogs had a couple of highlights in the game as their Australian punter Irwin-Hill ran 51 yards for a TD on a fake punt, and QB Allen turned a fake handoff into an easy pass for a Razorbacks TD, a team that hasn’t beaten an SEC opponent since a 49-7 win over Kentucky in 2012. Arkansas QB Allen completed 15 of 27 passes for 199 yards and 1 TD and RB Collins had 21 carries for 131 yards and 1 TD, while RB Williams had 18 carries for 95 yards and a TD.

Statistically the Aggies had 21 first downs with 523 total yards with 386 passing and 199 rushing with 1 turnover, while the Razorbacks had 22 first downs for 484 yards with 199 passing and 285 rushing with 1 turnover.

The Aggies won the game on their 1st possession in OT as QB Hill hit WR Kennedy for a 25 yard TD and then their defense stepped up a stopped the Razorbacks.
