Sun Bowl Oregon State vs. Notre Dame Betting Preview & Picks (12-29-2023)

At the beginning, bowl projections for Notre Dame had them in either the Reliaquest Bowl or the Pop-Tarts Bowl. And the former was to be against the LSU Tigers. The thought of playing Brian Kelly and his new team intrigued a lot of Irish fans. But the College Football Betting craziness that happened in the final College Football Playoff rankings caused a lot of unplanned moves by the bowls. Notre Dame has a short history in the Sun Bowl. Also, they have a short history against Oregon State.

Sun Bowl Format

The first Sun Bowl was played on January 1, 1935, as a fundraising event for underprivileged children in the community and upgrades to the El Paso High School Stadium. Next, Hardin-Simmons and New Mexico State were invited to play. And the game has been a part of the college bowl season since that point. This is one of the oldest bowl games in America, starting the same year as the Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl.

Keeping its offshore betting roots close to home, the early Sun Bowls featured teams based in Texas or members of the Border Conference. To illuminate, Texas Tech, Hardin-Simmons, and UTEP have each been involved in multiple contests. UTEP was known as Texas Mines and Texas Western before changing its name in 1967. Correlate the Miners are the host school for the Sun Bowl and play their home games in the stadium.

Since 2011, the selection committee has paired teams from the ACC and the Pac-12. The conferences first hooked up on December 31, 2011, with Utah beating Georgia Tech. It was the only overtime game in Sun Bowl history.

Sun Bowl Prediction

The Irish have memorable losses to the Beavers in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl and the 2004 Insight.com Bowl. Now, Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith is at Michigan State. And OSU starting QB DJ Uiagalelei is in the transfer portal. In this situation, Oregon State enters the game without its head coach and QB. Notre Dame has too much in comparison.
