On Saturday afternoon, the No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish welcome the No. 17 Stanford Cardinal to South Bend. The game is scheduled to kick off a 3:30 PM ET in Notre Dame Stadium, with all of the action to be televised nationally on NBC.
The Cardinal comes into this game after a narrow escape at home against the Arizona Wildcats. Stanford needed until overtime to get it done, leaving with a 54-48 victory. Down 48-34 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal scored two touchdowns to even the game, and scored another in overtime. The Irish are coming off of a rout at home of Miami-Florida, 41-3. They held the Hurricanes to a single field goal, shutting them out in the final three quarters of the game. Notre Dame held edges in first downs at 34-13, total yards at 587-28, and rushing yards at 376-84. They also held onto the ball for nearly 20 more minutes than Miami. The Irish have not run for 300 or more yards since 2003, when they did it against Stanford. They also have the 2nd ranked defense, which has given up just 3, 6, and 3 points in their last three games.
Stanford is 17-5 ATS recently, and 11-3 ATS on the road. They are 0-5 ATS as single-digit road underdogs. Notre dame is 21-36 ATS as a host, and 5-13 ATS as a home favorite.
In five of the last eight games between these two, the difference has been by a touchdown. However, in the last two meetings the Cardinal won 28-14, and 37-14 as 7 and 4 ½ point favorites. Stanford holds a 645-216 edge in rushing yards in the last three matchups. They do not have QB Andrew Luck behind center anymore, though.
