Michigan Wolverines Team Overview
Last game, the Michigan Wolverines won 34-17 against the New Mexico Lobos as 34.5-point home favorites. The game went over the sportsbook total of 49. The Bryce Underwood era started with a bang on Saturday night. As a result, the Wolverines moved to 1-0 on the young season, and Michigan will head to Oklahoma for a big game against the Sooners.
It wasn’t just an upgrade at QB that made it feel different. Namely, Chip Lindsey, who helped coach both Drake Maye and Omarion Hampton at North Carolina, showed why he’s a great offensive mind. The Wolverines had a unique route tree for their wide receivers while maintaining their roots as a power-run team.
Gamblers were not sure we saw that at all last season. However, Lindsey had Michigan running some up-tempo offense in the game. Utilizing Underwood’s strengths — rolling out of the pocket with a quick release — it appeared to catch New Mexico off guard, as Michigan typically employs traditional huddling.
Certainly, Underwood is a special talent, and we saw that with several of his throws. The Belleville product has zip on his passes, and he’s not afraid to stay in the pocket to find his man. The two-minute drill to finish the first half was as good a drive as any Michigan QB has had since J.J. McCarthy.
Oklahoma Sooners Team Overview
Last game, the Oklahoma Sooners won 35-3 against Illinois State but failed to cover the spread as 39.5-point home favorites. Oklahoma started 2025 off in the winner’s circle, though there may be some fireworks left over for next week. Transfer quarterback John Mateer unveiled the No. 18 Sooners’ new look offense against Illinois State on Saturday. While there were bright spots, OU still had some hiccups to work through
Initially, the first two drives of the Ben Arbuckle era left plenty to be desired. Oklahoma was held to a three-and-out on the opening possession of the game. Also, a Jaren Kanak fumble killed the Sooners’ second drive. Those were the only signs of growing pains on Saturday. However, as OU’s offense kicked into gear for the rest of the half. Oklahoma racked up 252 total yards on its final three offensive drives of the first half, all of which ended in touchdowns.
Mateer took to the sky and spread the ball around to a few different receivers. Mateer closed his debut with a 20-yard connection to Keontez Lewis for a score late in the fourth quarter. In sum, he completed 30-of-37 passes for 392 yards and three scores, while also throwing one interception. Also, Mateer rushed for 24 yards on seven carries and one score.
