Helton and Ash Top Betting on College Football Hot Seats

2019 College Football Hot Seat Rankings

At the onset of the college football season is the famous Hot Seat List.  For 2019 there are some obvious names as candidates to be fired.  Clay Helton of the USC Trojans tops nearly all rankings.  Following Helton is Chris Ash of Rutgers, Randy Edsall of UConn, Lovie Smith of Illinois and Willie Taggart of Florida State.  Other potential candidates are Justin Fuente at Virginia Tech, Kalani Sitake at BYU and Bob Davie with New Mexico.  Matt Luke of Ole Miss is another popular betting on College Football choice.  Beyond that are currently unknown candidates that will emerge later.

Clay Helton – USC Trojans

Clay Helton is going to be the clear betting on College Football favorite to be first fired.  Last year’s 5-7 disaster is the catalyst for his status.  Keep in mind Helton led USC to the Pac 12 and Rose Bowl championships in 2016.  That Trojans team finished third in the country.  Since then USC has been a lackluster program.  Now Helton is now trying to bail out with the spread offense.  The move comes as a panic at a school known for a power pro attack.

Chris Ash – Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Certainly, Ash undertook a challenge in 2016 when he took over one of the least respected programs in college football.  However, in this new online betting Age of instant gratification Ash isn’t moving the needle.  Records of 2-10, 4-8 and 1-11 last season lack progress.  Empty seats and low donations add to the pressure. Finally, the Big Ten East Division is likely too much for the Scarlet Knights to overcome.

Randy Edsall – Connecticut Huskies

Namely Randy Edsall may not be the most likeable coach going.  But the way his administration sold his program out has generated sympathy.  UConn will leave the American Athletic Conference to go Independent next year.  Due to basketball being a far greater priority did the school make this choice.  UConn has posted betting on College Football record of 3-9 and 1-11 in the last two seasons.  Edsall could well be lucky to be fired.

Love Smith – Illinois Fighting Illini

In view of his demeanor does Lovie Smith come off as “low energy.”  Adding to the misery of this program is a lack of real progress.  Smith has gone 3-9, 2-10, and 4-8 last year.  While recruiting is reputed to be good Illinois lacks the bells and whistles of top tier programs.  Until a full investment is made the coach may not matter.  But in his fourth season Smith has got to move the needle.  An improved and deeper Big Ten West makes that difficult.

Willie Taggart – Florida State Seminoles

Granted a 5-7 record is not what Seminole fans expected in Taggart’s inaugural campaign.  Taggart inherited a mess of a program that was a mere shell of itself.  His predecessor Jimbo Fisher was obviously mailing it in at the end of his tenure.  Still, the program is now Taggart’s and an alarming drop in attendance has added to the need to get things going.  However Taggart believes that with more of his guys on the roster he can stem the tide.
