At the beginning of his arrival at Arizona, Kevin Sumlin was celebrated as the perfect fit. Sumlin had just been fired at Texas A&M but respected for producing annual bowl teams. Additionally, he was known as Johnny “Football” Manziel’s coach. Even though Sumlin did not recruit the Heisman Trophy winner. Last year Sumlin inherited a 7-6 team from predecessor Rich Rodriguez. Arizona’s betting on NCAA football record of 5-7 revealed all of Sumlin’s weaknesses. By contrast Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich led a resurgent 8-6 bowl campaign. Hawaii will attempt to build on that season with more consistency.

Ugly Beginning
At the onset of Sumlin’s arrival were dreams of Pac 12 South Division titles. Enthusiasm was such that over $41 million was spent on facility improvements for football. Certainly the 41-40 loss at Arizona State in the Territorial Cup game was tough to take. A bowl invite was nuked by the Wildcats arch rivals. From this point Arizona will need to show they are responding to Sumlin. Tate will have to prove that 2017 was no fluke. And a defense ranked 92nd overall and 98th for points allowed must tighten. Indeed, Sumlin’s Texas A&M teams had the reputation for being soft. Nothing has changed that perception.
Back to the Future
Hawaii went back to what worked best for them in their glory years under June Jones. Accordingly, junior quarterback Cole McDonald made second team Mountain West last year. Hawaii averaged 31 points per game.
