2023 Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview
Gamblers are asking if Texas Tech be this year’s version of TCU. To illuminate, that means evaluating if the Red Raiders can exceed preseason offshore bookmaker expectations to get to the Big 12 title game. The Red Raiders finished ’22 on a high note by winning their last four games. Including a 51-48 shootout against Oklahoma and a 42-25 victory against Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl.
Quarterback Tyler Shough returns after a strong finish to ’22. And receiver Jerand Bradley is poised to rank among the best in the Big 12. At the same time, an offensive line that allowed 41 sacks last year must improve for the Red Raiders to reach the next level on offense.
On the other hand, the defense is still a work in College Football Betting progress for coach Joey McGuire. But this unit is experienced with six returning starters and features two of the Big 12’s top linemen, Jaylon Hutchings and Tony Bradford Jr.
Coordinator Zach Kittley’s offense is set for a tremendous jump in 2023. Following the Red Raiders’ marked success in 2022. The Red Raiders are coming off a season in which they finished with the second-best offense in the Big 12. Also, they were fourth in the Big 12 for scoring offense, averaging 34.2 points. What damaged the Red Raiders last season was inconsistency on the offensive line. With fifth-year senior Tyler Shough returning as quarterback, there’s a lot to be excited about on the offensive side of the ball for the Red Raiders.
The word defining Tech’s defense in 2023 is experience. To illuminate, the Red Raiders are returning six starters. Also, they have several other players who contributed meaningful snaps in 2022. The Red Raiders led the Big 12 in sacks (31) and had the ninth-best red zone defense in all of FBS last season. Those are major steps forward for a program known for years for its subpar defenses. Although Tech was not statistically impressive in many categories last season, there is a sense building in Lubbock that the defense in 2023 could be vastly better.
Gamblers can see the confidence brewing in Lubbock. Second-year head coach Joey McGuire has Red Raider Nation again believing after an 8-5 debut campaign. Now comes a 2023 season that will reveal much about the future of the Texas Tech football program.
