Following three seasons on the job, Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has validated his hiring and position. He arrived from Georgia, where he served as defensive coordinator. Lanning learned the most important lesson about college football success while at Georgia. Specifically, UGA head coach Kirby Smart is a recruiting powerhouse, consistently producing the highest-rated classes year after year.
Lanning has taken that lesson to Oregon, where he has significantly improved the roster quality. Still, 2024 was arguably the greatest sports betting season in school history. Now the question is if Nike U can keep it going?
Consider that only six starters return from last season’s team that earned the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. Dan Lanning’s program has major retooling to do on both sides of the ball. However, the Ducks should remain in contention for the 2025 college football futures in the Big Ten title.
At the onset, new quarterback Dante Moore is ready to direct Oregon’s high-powered attack after sitting behind Dillon Gabriel last year. Lanning restocked Moore’s supporting cast through the portal. Including top pickups in offensive lineman Isaiah World (Nevada) and running back Makhi Hughes (Tulane). Also, Evan Stewart and touted true freshman Dakorien Moore provide a standout duo in the receiving corps.
With the defensive line and secondary in rebuild mode, Oregon will need Moore and the offense to carry this team early in ’25. Specifically, a road trip to Penn State on Sept. 27 is an opportunity to see how far along the Ducks are in the reloading process.
Oregon doesn’t have to play Ohio State or Michigan. Of course, there are other Big Ten teams you’d like to miss. But skipping those two is terrific. Not having to face Illinois and Nebraska should matter again this year. Any time you can sidestep two bowl teams, you take it. UCLA and Maryland should be better, and they’re out of the mix, too. It would be nice to have Purdue on the slate, but you can’t miss everyone.
In comparison to 2024, the team might not be as good. But with no Ohio State on the slate, the schedule is a tad easier to navigate. There will likely be a loss, most likely at Penn State. Additionally, another misfire will make it tough to recover and return to the Big Ten Championship. It won’t matter. The Ducks will get to the CFP.
