Last year, Cignetti arrived from James Madison, a virtual expansion team in FBS football. At James Madison, he went 8-3 in 2022 and then 11-1 in 2023 before taking a NCAAF future odds career risk at Indiana Hoosiers. Cignetti was able to utilize the portal to recruit most of his top James Madison players to Indiana. However, he won’t be able to rely on the portal as much in 2025. However, when you Google Cignetti, you’ll find that he wins big at unusual places. Thus, there is hope that Indiana can be a regular bowl team at the very least.

“Google me, I win.” So says Curt Cignetti, head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers. Last year, in his first season in Bloomington, Cignetti made history. He inherited a program that won only nine games in the previous three seasons and led IU to an 11-2 mark and a berth in the College Football Playoff. As a result, Cignetti has cursed other coaches at historic losers or new coaches who are not rebuilding their programs fast enough. Impatient fans and donors will point to Bloomington, IN, as an example of a quick fix.
Now armed with a big new contract, Cignetti must prove that he was not a bolt of offshore betting lightning but instead a coach who can maintain a winning program at a basketball school.
Certainly, when examining the 2025 college football futures schedule for Indiana, it is safe to assume they would rather play weaklings than Oregon, Penn State, or Iowa. Still, Indiana doesn’t have too much to complain about. IU misses Ohio State and Michigan. Those two were major problems for this program forever, even when you consider the epic win over the Wolverines last year.
Also, there’s no complaining about not playing Nebraska, Minnesota, USC, and Washington – all should be even more dangerous this season. Hence, to put it politely, Indiana isn’t exactly pushing the envelope when it comes to non-conference play. In comparison, IU should start the season 3-0. Consider that the first four games are in Bloomington. Correlate the Hoosiers don’t leave Indiana after November 8th. However, the middle portion of the schedule is rough.
There are four road games in six dates. Starting with back-to-back away games at Iowa and Oregon, with a week off in between. And then back-to-back games against Maryland and Penn State. Following blowout wins last season, Michigan State and UCLA won’t be as beatable.
In sum, Indiana expects to split the dates against Iowa and Oregon on the road. And then take care of Bloomington with a 4-0 Big Ten home record. Finally, they must overcome a probable road loss to Penn State to get 10-2 with another at-large spot in the College Football Playoff.
However, if IU suffers losses to Illinois, Iowa, and Oregon State, and starts the conference season on a down note, they may never recover. Thus, it could be a challenging season. It’s a bowl campaign, but it’s not nearly as much fun.
