2026 College Football Futures Odds – Norvell Aims For Reprieve

Mike Norvell is firmly on the brink at Florida State heading into 2026. Following the high of a 13-1 season and ACC title in 2023, the Seminoles have collapsed. FSU has just seven wins over the past two years, finishing near the bottom of the conference both times. That two-year College Football Futures Odds stretch ranks among the worst in program history. As a result, it has exhausted most of the patience that once existed in Tallahassee.

Overall, Norvell’s record sits at roughly 38-34 across six seasons. Strip out the 2023 breakthrough, and the picture looks far worse. Last season, the administration retained him largely because of a massive buyout that still hovered around $50 million. Multiple reports indicate Florida State explored other options. Including interest in Lane Kiffin. But ultimately, they decided the financial hit was too steep for an immediate change.

2026 College Football Futures Florida State Seminoles Prospects

Still, that buyout does not mean he is safe. Hot-seat rankings place him among the coaches under the heaviest pressure in the country. Another offshore bookmaker season of six or seven wins will be problematic. Especially if it includes early losses to teams FSU is expected to beat. That would almost certainly end his tenure.

The program has already indicated that an improvement in College Football Odds is required. Norvell has responded by retaking play-calling duties, overhauling parts of the roster through the portal, and emphasizing culture. But the margin for error is essentially gone.

The 2026 season is widely viewed as a final opportunity. If the Seminoles show clear progress and return to bowl contention with competitive performances against better teams, Norvell can buy more time. However, if the mediocrity continues, the buyout will become a secondary concern, and Florida State will move on.

The collapse at Florida State after the 2023 season was not caused solely by the playoff snub. That moment left a deep scar. The Seminoles went 13-0, won the ACC, and were left out of the four-team College Football Playoff due to the star quarterback Jordan Travis suffering a season-ending injury late in the year. The selection committee viewed them as a different, lesser team without him. Hence, that decision fueled anger and a sense of injustice inside the program. But the real damage came from what followed.

Key players who had driven the 2023 success left for the NFL. Including Travis, edge rushers Jared Verse and Braden Fiske, and running back Trey Benson. Those departures stripped the roster of its leadership and best talent. Florida State had already been thin on elite high-school recruiting under Mike Norvell.

Several blue-chip prospects from earlier classes transferred out or underperformed. Hence, creating a void that the program struggled to fill consistently through the transfer portal. The next groups of transfers and signees never matched the production or toughness of the 2023 core.

Without that foundation, the offense and defense both regressed. In turn, quarterback play became a revolving door. Scheme continuity existed on paper. But execution and physicality disappeared against better competition. Losses mounted quickly in 2024. Including historic defeats and problems carried into 2025. What had looked like a rising power turned into a team unable to sustain its winning ways without its previous stars.

The snub accelerated the decline by damaging morale and public perception at a critical moment. Still, there were deeper issues with roster construction, player retention, and an inability to reload with comparable talent and leadership. Those shortcomings turned one painful December into two lost seasons.
