2026 College Football Futures Odds – Fitz Takes Helm for Sparty

Pat Fitzgerald is the new head coach at Michigan State. Specifically, he was hired on December 1, 2025, to replace Jonathan Smith. That was after the Spartans went 4-8 in 2025. He signed a five-year contract worth approximately $30 million, with incentives tied to wins and championships.

Of course, Fitzgerald returns to the Big Ten after a three-year College Football Futures Odds absence. He spent 17 seasons as Northwestern’s head coach (2006–2022). Overall, he compiled a 110-101 record, winning two Big Ten West titles. He made 10 bowl appearances and earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2018.

Since Mark Dantonio retired, Michigan State has struggled. To show, they posted losing records in most seasons and frequently missed the bowls. Fitzgerald arrives with a reputation for toughness, Midwest program-building, and high standards. At Big Ten Media Days in July 2026, he set an explicit goal of winning the conference championship. In turn, he described the program as carrying “a bag of chips on our shoulder.”

This is a classic reboot hire. To show, Fitz is an experienced Big Ten coach with deep regional ties. He takes over a program that has underperformed relative to its resources and history. Early expectations are modest. Indeed, MSU is projected near the bottom of the expanded Big Ten. But the hire signals a push to restore competitiveness and culture under a coach who has already proven he can win in the conference.

Why Pat Fitzgerald Could Succeed or Fail at Michigan State

Pat Fitzgerald can succeed at Michigan State because of the fit and his track sportsbook record. Also, the program’s current needs line up unusually well. He already proved he can win in the Big Ten under difficult circumstances.

At Northwestern, he regularly punched above the Wildcats’ resource level. Consider that Michigan State offers a stronger brand, better facilities, a more passionate fan base. In addition to greater financial capacity than Northwestern ever did. If Fitzgerald could compete with less, the College Football Odds ceiling rises in East Lansing.

Stylistically, he matches the look of successful Michigan State teams. He preaches physical, tough, line-of-scrimmage football. Of course, that was the same identity Mark Dantonio used to win Big Ten titles. Still, Spartan fans respond to that brand of football. And Fitzgerald has openly pointed to Dantonio’s model as the standard he wants to restore. Cultural alignment of that kind is rare and valuable in a rebuild. Now, he arrives hungry. Three years away from the sideline after a painful exit at Northwestern left him motivated.

However, Pat Fitzgerald can fail at Michigan State for several concrete reasons that have nothing to do with personality or effort.

His recent on-field track record is weak. In his final four seasons at Northwestern, he went 14-31. The offense ranked near the bottom of the country in multiple years. And the defense declined after longtime coordinator Mike Hankwitz left. Michigan State just fired a coach for going 9-15 over two seasons; Fitzgerald’s last two years were 4-20. That is not ancient history.

Of great concern is that Fitz has been out of coaching for three full seasons during the most disruptive period the sport has ever seen. NIL, the transfer portal, revenue sharing, and roster construction rules changed dramatically while he was sidelined.

Michigan State’s current roster is thin. Returning production ranks among the lowest in the FBS. In turn, the program has lacked a clear identity or consistent recruiting wins since the Dantonio era ended. Correlate that Fitzgerald inherits a team projected near the bottom of an 18-team Big Ten with a difficult schedule.

Finally, funding and institutional patience are not guaranteed. Michigan State has faced donor fatigue, buyout costs, and competing financial priorities.
