There is a stunning fact about the Georgia Bulldogs that defines their image. To be exact, Georgia has only two national championships in its history (1942 and 1980). For a program that thinks of itself as a national power, that is a humbling reality check. Only Michigan’s program compares with so much hype and so little in actual accomplishments. Of course, everyone remembers Georgia’s epic 2017 run. UGA probably should have won the national championship. Smart and the Bulldogs failed to hold the lead against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the championship game. Namely, Tua Tagovailoa came off the bench to make history. He sparked Alabama’s stunning offshore betting comeback win. Smart made his name as Alabama defensive coordinator under Nick Saban. Thus, he won’t rest until that score is settled.
Following an 8-5 rookie season, Kirby Smart has led Georgia to top seven or better final national rankings four straight seasons. Smart learned a valuable lesson at Alabama. Nick Saban taught him that recruiting is everything. Smart took that lesson to heart. Especially after seeing what an advantage a roster full of five-star players delivers. Because of his consistently top-ranked recruiting classes, smart money sees Georgia as national championship material.
On the whole, offensive football is one consistent criticism of Smart. But Smart has indicated that the Bulldogs will open things up. UGA will have a few more wrinkles than what has been seen in the past. And the talent to make it come to life.
Second-year offensive coordinator Todd Monken continues to modernize the UGA attack with fourth-year junior quarterback JT Daniels. The USC transfer impressed everyone at the end of last season for Georgia. Consider that Daniels threw for 300 yards in two of his four starts. Georgia had a big play capability that was lacking before Daniels took command. Additionally, Daniels will enjoy the benefits of a strong running game and elite supporting cast. Defensively, UGA is overloaded with five-star talent.
2021 Georgia Bulldogs Schedule Highlights
The first week’s action will show if Georgia is ready for the big time. The Bulldogs will face the Clemson Tigers in Charlotte, NC, in a prime-time ABC telecast on September 4. If Georgia can get past Clemson, it could serve as the springboard for the biggest season in program history.
