Clay Helton – USC Trojans
Clay Helton has one big factor going in his favor for 2021. To show, the Pac-12 Conference isn’t out of its mediocre rut. And in the South Division, there are no better alternatives to the Men of Troy.
Justin Fuente – Virginia Tech Hokies
In comparison to most coaches, Justin Fuente is a massive disappointment. Fuente arrived at Virginia Tech with great fanfare. And he started off gangbusters. However, his ineffective recruiting is about to doom his once-promising career.
Matt Wells – Texas Tech Red Raiders
On the whole, Matt Wells was an odd offshore betting fit from the start at Texas Tech. Wells had no ties to the school or region. But he caught lightning in a bottle as head coach of Utah State. Now he is being exposed at a school that is becoming more difficult to win at.
Jim Harbaugh – Michigan Wolverines
Jim Harbaugh rode into Ann Arbor as the Knight on the white horse to save the day six years ago. Michigan fans gulped the Kool-Aid in vast quantities. Following a promising two-year resurgence in 2015-16, Harbaugh seemed to have lost his fire. Last year he and his team were lifeless and helpless. Harbaugh failed to find an NFL life raft after the 2020 campaign. Thus, he took a massive pay cut to stay where he’s no longer celebrated as the savior.
Dino Babers – Syracuse Orange
In 2018 Dino Babers led Syracuse to its first 10-win season in 17 years. Instead of capitalizing on that breakthrough, Babers has receded. Last year was a 1-10 debacle at a school that refuses to invest what its rivals do for football. Also, there is a sense that Babers got fat and happy with his new contract after that 2018 season.
Chip Kelly – UCLA Bruins
Once upon a time, Chip Kelly was a coach like no other. As Oregon’s head coach, his offense was among the most terrifying in history. Now the world has caught up to Kelly. And the UCLA administration still refuses to go all-in on football.
Scott Frost – Nebraska Cornhuskers
In like manner to Harbaugh, Scott Frost took over his alma mater where he was a championship quarterback. Frost has failed to move the College Football Betting needle and enters his fourth season still seeking a bowl game. Specifically, Frost stunned fans and gamblers with his failure to toughen the culture. Of great concern are the transfers of highly-rated recruits who wanted to bail on the program.
