Purdue coach Matt Painter has challenged his team to finish stronger in 2023. Last year the Boilermakers squad was led by eventual NBA lottery pick Jaden Ivey. But they failed to reach the expectations of gamblers. To show, those Boilermakers flamed out in a Sweet 16 loss to NCAA tourney Cinderella Saint Peter’s. Painter hopes these Boilermakers, featuring deep and talented forwards but inexperienced guards, can maximize their potential. Thus, another trip to the Sweet 16 is attainable. Especially if Purdue maximizes College Basketball odds matchups or breaks.

Purdue Boilermakers SBG Odds Overview
Overall, the Purdue Boilermakers are 12-0 straight up, 4-7-1 against the spread, and 4-8 over/under the total. Purdue has national rankings of 100th for scoring offense, 144th for field goal percentage, 306th for 3-point field goal percentage, 28th for free throw percentage, and 4th for offensive rebounding. While defensively, Purdue has national rankings of 32nd for scoring defense, 36th for field goal percentage permitted, 23rd for 3-point field goal percentage allowed, and 3rd for defensive rebounding.
Although Purdue is undefeated, they are not providing good offshore betting wagering value. Poor 3-point shooting and too much public money have kept the Boilermakers’ value down. Center Zach Edey leads Purdue with 22.6 points and 13.9 rebounds per contest.

Under Matt Painter, the Boilermakers have six Sweet Sixteen appearances with one Elite Eight. Painter has won three Big Ten regular season titles with one Big Ten Tournament championship. In sum, Painter was named National Coach of the Year in 2019 and is a 4-time Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Painter is a perfect fit at this highly regarded engineering school. In fact, he was a guard for the Boilermakers from 1989 through 1993. Thus, Painter has an acute understanding of his institution that an outsider couldn’t grasp. He also appreciates Purdue’s history and tradition, having played for the legendary Keady.
For decades, the Boilermakers have excelled at times when less is expected. It happened during the Gene Keady Era and now during the Painter. At the onset, most gamblers rated the Boilermakers as the Big Ten’s 5th- or 6th-best team, not a contender for a Big Ten title. It is true that’s where Painter and company are most comfortable.
Last season, as a frontrunner, the Boilermakers looked uncomfortable. On a day of ascending to No. 1 in the country, they had lost. And as the season wore on, Purdue never rediscovered its early-season groove. Now fans are hoping that Purdue has a chance to build as the season goes on and peaks at the right time.
The Boilermakers have advanced to at least the Sweet 16 in 5 of the last 6 NCAA Tournaments. And they went to the Elite Eight, within an eyelash of the Final Four, in 2019.
Purdue has enough to get to the Sweet 16 again this season. However, it might take a 2nd-round upset to get into the Tournament’s 2nd weekend. But that’s an attainable goal if the Boilermakers’ frontcourt is as good as advertised and the backcourt can provide enough scoring punch.
