No. 21 SMU upset by UConn 81-73

basketball falling through hoopOn the Sunday the 1st of March 2015 the NCAA BB schedule brought us an exciting game between the No. 21 SMU Mustangs 23-6 of the AA Conference who was upset by the unranked but renowned UConn Huskies 17-11 also of the AA Conference, with the game played at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut at 2 PM ET and was seen on CBS TV with the Huskies winning 81-73.

The scoring in the game was led both in the 1st and 2nd half by the Huskies of UConn as in the 1st half of the game the Huskies of UConn outscored the Mustangs of SMU 32-26 thus ending the 1st half and the No.21 SMU with a 6 point deficit. In the 2nd half of the game the Huskies again outscore the Mustangs, but only by 2 points 49-47 and UConn thus won the game 81-73.

The leading 5 performers in this game for Mustangs of SMU were forward-Kennedy-18 points 9 rebounds off the bench, center-Moreira-14 points 4 rebounds 1 assist, guard-Emelogu-13 points 3 rebounds 3 assists, guard-Moore-9 points 5 assists and guard-Manuel-9 points 8 rebounds and 1 assist.

The top 5 performers for the Huskies of UConn was guard-Purvis-28 points 4 rebounds 3 assists, guard-Boatright-23 points 3 rebound 5 assists, guard-Hamilton-16 points 7 rebounds 3 assists, forward-Facey-6 points 2 rebound off the bench and center-Brimah-4 points and 4 rebounds.

In comparing the team statistics the Mustangs scored 73 points in the game with 55 attempted field goals making 25 for 45% completion, made 4 of 14-3 pointers for 28% completion, made 19 of 25 foul shots for a 76% completion rate and committed 20 fouls in the game. Meanwhile the Huskies scored the winning total 81 points as they attempted 47 field goals making 25 for 53% completion; they made 9 of 20-3 pointers for 45% completion, and made 22 of 29 foul shots for a 76% completion rate and also committed 20 fouls in the game.

The game leaders for SMU for points, was Kennedy with 18 and for UConn it was Purvis with 28. On rebounds for SMU it was Kennedy with 9 and for UConn it was Hamilton with 7. For assists for SMU it was Moore with 5 and for UConn it was Boatright with 5. On Steals for SMU it was Moore with 2 and Purvis for UConn with 3. The blocks were led by Moreira for SMU with 2 and Brimah for UConn with 3 blocks.

The Huskies entered into this game as 0-4 losers in their games with the Mustangs of SMU and that dates back to the beginning of the American Athletic Conference, and it all of the 4 games SMU won by at least 9 points.

The loss for the Mustangs of SMU and now heading into the last week of their regular season they are trailing Tulsa by ½ game who beat Memphis this past Saturday in OT. Then for the last regular 2014-15 season game SMU will play Tulsa on the 8th of March 2015.
