Head coach Gregg Popovich is already in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is a 5-time NBA championship coach with the Spurs and a 3-time NBA Coach of the Year. Popovich was named one of the NBA’s top 15 coaches in history. Now, in his mid-70s, he had to retire from a team that often had no chance of winning. David ‘The Admiral’ Robinson was one of the best centers in the NBA during the 1990s. Correlate that the Spurs became a dynasty when Gregg Popovich took over the team and was able to select Tim Duncan as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. Previously, the Spurs had won 20 games. But they were a 56-win team in Duncan’s first season alongside Robinson. And this team went on to win its first title during the strike-shortened 1998-99 season.
Still, Robinson was with the team when it won its second title in 2003, but he had been surpassed by youngsters Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker made San Antonio the most successful team in the league for two decades.
