Yankees Look Overvalued Again for 2021

As a worldwide iconic brand, the Yankees are a perpetual baseball betting favorite. Specifically, New York generates the most revenue in the game. Further, they own the richest history in North American sports. This gives the Yankees a betting brand unlike any other. New York has the reputation of being in the championship hunt every season. Therefore, it surprises many gamblers that the Yankees have won just one World Series (2009) since the 2000 campaign. Further, the Yankees have only one American League pennant since 2003. All of this means gamblers aren’t getting a good return on an expensive investment.

2021 New York Yankees SBG Odds Overview

New York is second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the highest payroll in the game. As a result, this feeds into Major League Baseball’s image being a big-market game. Most casual gamblers think that only mega-revenue teams like the Yankees and Dodgers have a legitimate title shot. It is true the Bronx Bombers have missed the postseason only four times since 1995. But advancing in the playoffs has become a routine problem for New York. What’s more, the Yankees cost more on the board than what they are worth.

2021 New York Yankees Season Preview

Last year the Yankees had an online betting record of 33-27. And New York was eliminated in the ALDS by the Tampa Bay Rays. It was the latest in a long line of postseason embarrassments for New York. Manager Aaron Boone was hired because his predecessor, Joe Girardi, consistently fell short of the World Series. But Boone has not done any better. Further, Boone lacks Girardi’s World Series ring.

The Yankees lineup remained potent in 2020. Most important of all, New York worked through numerous injuries to rank 4th in MLB for run production. The Yankees ranked an impressive 5th for home runs. The pitching staff ranked only 14th for earned run average. Additionally, New York was 12th for quality starts and 16th for the bullpen. The Yankees were an abysmal 30th for fielding errors.

Last year began with considerable baseball betting hype over starter Gerrit Cole’s acquisition. Cole signed the largest contract ever given to a pitcher. And he delivered an excellent initial season as a Yankee. Cole posted a 2.84 earned run average and 0.96 WHIP to go with a record of 7-3. But when Cole was not on the hill, there was a noticeable difference for the Yankees. More emphatically, New York’s pitching staff is not of championship caliber.

Right fielder Aaron Judge continues to be plagued by injuries. Specifically, the 2020 campaign was his third straight in which he missed considerable playing time. When Judge is in the lineup, he is one of baseball’s most dangerous hitters. Accordingly, Judge has only one full season as a player. Notwithstanding his potential is the fact that he misses too much time. Until that changes, the Yankees are not going to bring full value.

On the whole, the Yankees are good enough to make the playoffs again. What is not certain is how far they can go in the postseason. Pitching remains their biggest worry come playoff time.
