Initially, gamblers ran for the tall grass as far as Washington is concerned, and with plenty of good reasons. Another year of baseball betting odds misery likely beckons for the Nats. Indeed, mediocrity continues for the Washington Nationals. Last year was more of the same for fans and gamblers. Since their 2019 World Series championship, the Nationals have had five consecutive losing seasons and lost at least 91 games in the past four campaigns. Including 107 defeats in 2022. Previously, in an alternate offshore betting timeline, the offseason existed that would’ve sprung the Nationals into genuine wild-card contention. Washington, buoyed by Patrick Corbin’s massive contract coming off the books, could’ve been active at the top of the free-agent market.
Instead, it’s an unfortunate path for the Nats. Consider the bevy of promising young players on their roster. The moves they’ve made aren’t bad in and of themselves — retaining Williams fortifies the rotation’s floor. While Lowe immediately becomes the club’s best hitter. But this feels like something of a missed opportunity. If everything breaks right, the Nats could still be a pesky character in 2025. Still, the likelihood of that, however, could have been higher.
Joining them is shortstop CJ Abrams. He made his first All-Star team in 2024 but had some struggles in the second half of the season. He was also sent down to the minors after being caught staying out late in Chicago before a day game.
High expectations are placed on their young players, though. The most notable pieces on the roster are James Wood and Dylan Crews. These two players have the potential to be the best on the team.
James Wood played in 79 games at the big league level last season and slashed .264/.354/.427. He hit nine home runs, collected 41 RBI, and also stole 14 bases. Meanwhile, Dylan Crews dominated in the minor leagues but did not enjoy the same MLB success as Wood.
Manager Dave Martinez has been in his position since 2018. He led the Nats to the 2019 World Series title.
