Ownership’s mandate to shrink MLB odds payroll due to an unsettled local television situation increased the degree of difficulty. Hence, it was an already tricky offseason for the Twins. Minnesota lost Sonny Gray and Kenta Maeda to free agency and traded Jorge Polanco.
Minnesota received veteran starter Anthony DeSclafani and reliever Justin Topa as part of the Polanco swap. Meanwhile, the Twins’ lone MLB additions this offseason are signing 37-year-old first baseman Carlos Santana. Also, they signed middle relievers Josh Staumont and Jay Jackson for a combined $7 million or so.
Certainly, Minnesota will be relying on prospects and other minimum-salaried young players to fill lots of gaps this season. Previously, Veteran Depth covered them in 2023. Now, the Twins’ payroll is down almost $35 million, and it’s undeniable they’ve subtracted talent coming off their first playoff series win in two decades. But it’s still their division to win.
