The Baltimore Orioles have been losing on a regular basis versus the baseball lines and the lack of success cost manager Dave Trembley his job. He was fired on Friday and replaced by third base coach Juan Samuel. The Orioles have the worst record vs. the baseball odds in the league and they are headed for their 13th straight losing season. Baseball lines list the Orioles as underdogs in almost every game they play. Baltimore has a very poor pitching staff and their hitting has been far worse this season than expected. President of baseball operations, Andy MacPhail announced the decision to fire Trembley on Friday.
Baltimore lost 16 of their first 18 games this season and things really haven’t gotten much better. On a recent road trip they went 0-6 vs. the baseball odds and were outscored 34-8 in the six games. Trembley had a 187-283 record with the Orioles. Much of the blame is not Trembley’s though as the Orioles didn’t give him much talent to work with. MacPhail has not done a good job getting players for Baltimore and it was Trembley who had to try and win with it.
Baltimore went 68-93 in 2008 and 64-98 last year. Baltimore has struggled this season and injuries have not helped. The team lost Brian Roberts, Mike Gonzalez, Felix Pie, Jim Johnson and Koji Uehara to injuries. There is just not much talent on the Orioles to fill in the gaps. The Orioles are last in the league in batting average and runs scored. The Orioles pitching staff is not much better and they are allowing a ton of home runs. The bullpen has been a disaster as they have blown more saves than they actually have. They have no closer as Gonazez and Johnson are hurt. They tried Alfredo Simon in that role and he did well before getting hurt.
The Orioles will try and be improved with Juan Samuel as the interim manager. He has not managed at the Major League level but he did lead Binghamton of the Eastern League to a 70-69 record. He was a coach with Detroit for seven years and this is his fourth season with Baltimore. He is the sixth manager for the Orioles since 1997.
