Jacob deGrom Favored for Third NL Cy Young with MLB Lines

Although his stats are quite good but not uber dominant the Mets Jacob deGrom has won the last two NL Cy Young Awards. In his quest for a third consecutive Cy Young deGrom is the clear favorite. However, the real question is what value he brings to the MLB lines for 2020. At 5/2 deGrom is very expensive. In fact, he brings no real betting value. Plus, there are only two pitchers in National League history that have won three or more consecutive Cy Young Awards. Let’s evaluate the top favorites for the 2020 NL Cy Young Award.

2020 National Cy Young Award Overview

A big advantage that deGrom has is playing in New York. As an example, a pitcher with his numbers playing for the Cincinnati Reds or Miami Marlins would never win a Cy Young Award. Add to the fact that the Mets are a top sportsbook favorite to make the playoffs and you get a 5/2 price. More emphatically, there are better values on pitchers just as good on the board.

Jacob deGrom

For the 2019 season, Jacob deGrom was 11-8 with a 2.43 earned run average. Compared to that are 2018 numbers of 10-9 with a 1.70 earned run average. Of course, he is an excellent pitcher. But so are other choices at far better prices.

Max Scherzer

The first among alternative choices is Max Scherzer. At Detroit Scherzer was the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner. Further, he won the NL Cy Young at Washington in 2016 and 2017. In the 2019 season, Scherzer 11-7 with a 2.92 earned run average and WHIP of 1.03. But in 2018 he was 18-7 with a 2.53 ERA and 0.91 WHIP.

Stephen Strasburg

Three-time All-Star and 2019 World Series Most Valuable Player Stephen Strasburg is another excellent candidate. To illuminate Strasburg was 18-6 with a 3.32 earned run average and 1.04 WHIP. In the eyes of many Strasburg could still have potentially more upside.

Clayton Kershaw

While Kershaw is something of a blast from the past, he offers the combination of ability and price. Kershaw has already won three NL Cy Young Awards with the Dodgers in 2011, 2013, and 2014. Additionally, he is an eight-time All-Star. Kershaw is coming off another strong season in 2019 with a record of 16-5 and 3.03 earned run average with a WHIP of 1.04.

Walker Buehler

Consider that as a first-year starter Walker Buehler earned All-Star honors with the Dodgers. Buehler was 14-4 with a 3.26 earned run average and 1.04 WHIP. Most important of all he plays for a team that will be in the hunt for the World Series and a threat for 100 wins. That means Buehler is a 20-win candidate, which could gain the Cy Young.

In this situation, Clayton Kershaw brings the perfect combination of MLB lines price, ability, and team. He is still one of the best pitchers in the game. Kershaw’s ability exceeds the odds. Too many of the other choices are overlays.
