Gamblers Flee 2024 Colorado Rockies

Gamblers Flee 2024 Colorado Rockies

The Rockies lost 103 games in 2023 and showered gamblers with plenty of red ink. Strangely, Colorado ranks in the middle of the baseball betting odds pack for MLB payroll. Yet, they have not built anything close to a team that could reach the .500 mark. It has gotten to the point where fans, gamers, and observers can say that the Colorado Rockies aren’t even trying. Colorado has had two playoff appearances since 2010 and has not finished with a winning record since 2018. As a result, they have no credibility with the gambling public.

Colorado Rockies Manager

Since 2017, Bud Black has been the Colorado manager. Black faces one of the hardest sportsbook challenges in the 2024 MLB season.

2024 Colorado Rockies Key Players

In 2023, 1B Kris Bryant produced 36 runs, ten doubles, ten home runs, 31 RBI, a .233 average, and a .680 OPS. However, Bryant could only play 80 games in 2023.

RHP Tyler Kinley is the Colorado closer. In 2023, Kinley was 0-4 with a 6.06 ERA and 1.65 WHIP. Consider that it was the worst MLB odds season of his career.

LHP Kyle Freeland is the Rockies’ number one starter. Last year, Freeland was 6-14 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. It was Freeland’s worst season since 2019.

2024 Colorado Rockies Offseason Moves

Key offseason acquisitions: RHP Cal Quantrill, RHP Dakota Hudson, LHP Jalen Beeks, C Jacob Stallings, RHP Anthony Molina

Key offseason departures: LHP Brent Suter, RHP Chris Flexen

Acquiring Quantrill from the Guardians was important. And signing Hudson shored up the rotation. Of major concern for 2024 is whether younger starters who were forced into action last year learn enough. It doesn’t help that the Rockies slept through the offseason. Colorado added a backup catcher and two starting pitchers who strike out fewer batters than almost anyone else in baseball.

Accordingly, it seems that the plan is to get hitters to put the ball in play. Colorado does have two of the best defenders in baseball Ezequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle. But more balls in play at Coors Field is a very, very bad idea. Coors Field is great at turning batted balls into hits. So maybe don’t get pitchers who already allow too many hits. It’s not like you could have expected the Rockies to trade for Corbin Burnes or sign a free-agent starter. But even if you set the bar extremely low, they somehow stayed under it. Colorado ranks 15th for MLB payroll.

2024 Colorado Rockies Recap

To summarize, the Colorado Rockies had a record of 59-103 and finished 5th in the National League West Division. Offensively, Colorado ranked 18th for runs scored, 17th for batting average, 20th for OPS, 27th for home runs, and 28th for stolen bases. At the same time, Colorado ranked 30th for earned run average, 30th for WHIP, 28th for strikeouts, 28th for quality starts, 14th for fewest errors, and 30th for bullpen ERA. Colorado was -1233 on the moneyline and -176 on the run line.

Last season, the Rockies became a team to oppose by gamblers who wanted nothing to do with them. While Colorado did lose a lot of money on the moneyline, some superior teams lost more. It all comes down to pricing, and Colorado was priced so favorably that they were able to offer value occasionally. Colorado was close to breaking even on the runline for the same reason.
