Gamblers Expect Cincinnati Reds to Take a Step Back in 2024

The Cincinnati Reds had a decent offseason. And the fact that they play in the mediocre National League Central gives them a legitimate shot for a postseason bid. For the third time in four seasons, the Cincinnati Reds finished with a .500 record or higher. However, the only time the Reds made the playoffs was in the 2020 COVID-shortened season. Specifically, that was when the baseball betting odds postseason field was expanded. Still, the Reds have at least stopped the hopelessness with their fans. However, gamblers are not sold on Cincinnati.

2024 Cincinnati Reds Offseason Moves

Key offseason acquisitions:  IF Jeimer Candelario, RHP Frankie Montas, RHP Nick Martinez, RHP Emilio Pagán, LHP Brent Suter

Key offseason departures: 1B Joey Votto, OF/IF Nick Senzel, RHP Derek Law, C Curt Casali

Last year, Cincinnati finished near the bottom of the Majors in rotation ERA and near the top in bullpen innings. So president of baseball operations Nick Krall prioritized pitching depth. He added a starter in Montas, relievers in Pagán and Suter, and a swingman who can do both in Martinez. In turn, the veteran additions are expected to fortify the staff and pick up innings.
At the onset, gamblers wonder if the rotation is enough to help reach the postseason.

Despite the additions, the Reds will still have several young starters. And at least nine pitchers are competing for five spots. Their big three, Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcraft, and Nick Lodolo, had injury-filled 2023 seasons. Correlate that among the more active small-market teams, the Reds have spent $103 million on free agents. Also, they’ve watched franchise icon Joey Votto leave with no apparent plans to bring him back. That is understandable from an off-field perspective. But it will be odd when the Opening Day lineup doesn’t have him at first base.

Now, the infield-rich Reds seemingly could still have a trade up their sleeve before the end of spring training. Cincinnati ranks 26th for MLB payroll.
