Can Mariners Make the Next Big Step in 2024

This offseason, the Seattle Mariners are getting some but not much future market baseball betting odds action. Seattle plays in a division loaded with the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, the past two World Series champions. Overall, few teams are better at perpetually disappointing their fans than the Seattle Mariners. It all goes back to 2001. Then, the M’s went 116-46, only to get blown out 4-1 in the ALCS. Last year, the Mariners were a trending future market pick after making the 2022 ALDS. It was their first playoff appearance since 2001.

2024 Seattle Mariners Offseason Moves

Key offseason acquisitions: DH Mitch Garver, RF Mitch Haniger, 2B Jorge Polanco, OF Luke Raley, and 3B Luis Urías

Key offseason departures: INF José Caballero, LHP Marco Gonzales, RF Teoscar Hernández, OF Jarred Kelenic, C Tom Murphy, LHP Robbie Ray, 3B Eugenio Suárez

Seattle should be better than they were last season. Cause by Jorge Polanco and Mitch Garver’s ability to produce home runs. But that was something the Mariners were already OK with. There was no huge free-agent splash in the offseason. Although, the Mariners’ payroll remains closer to the Guardians than the Rangers. Payroll is problematic considering how outstanding the rotation projects to be. It’s a rotation that should prompt some interest in the open market.

It was a brutally thin off-season for position players. But Seattle prefers to think outside of the box. There had to have been potential trades that could have led to more runs than this. Overall, the Mariners should pitch well, and they should hit just good enough. Hence, the Mariners should contend. But this offseason should have been exciting enough to make them AL West favorites.

Seattle ranks 18th for MLB payroll.

2024 Seattle Mariners Recap

To summarize, in 2023, the Seattle Mariners had a record of 88-74 and finished 3rd in the American League West Division. Offensively, Seattle ranked 12th for runs scored, 22nd for batting average, 16th for OPS, 11th for home runs, and 13th for stolen bases. While defensively, Seattle ranked 3rd for earned run average, 3rd for WHIP, 29th for strikeouts, 3rd for quality starts, 7th for fewest errors, and 4th for bullpen ERA. Seattle was -388 on the moneyline and -893 on the run line.

Last season, the Mariners were a trendy pick for gamblers, but that robbed Seattle of much of its value following their status as a surprise ambush team in 2022. Despite the sour taste in the mouths of fans and gamblers, Seattle can take encouragement from finishing only two games behind the past two World Series champions. After a mediocre offseason, the jury remains out in the minds of many gamblers.
