2024 Philadelphia Phillies Seek Third Straight Playoff Berth

Philadelphia had a solid, though unspectacular offseason. In turn, they will again be in the hunt for a wild card spot in the National League playoffs. However, a challenge to the Atlanta Braves in the National League East race remains highly debatable. Since the firing of manager Joe Girardi 51 games into the 2022 season, the Philadelphia Phillies were transformed. Philadelphia made the baseball betting odds playoffs for two consecutive seasons under Girardi’s replacement, Rob Thomson. Consider that many gamblers have taken a liking to the Phillies as a second-tier future market favorite.

The Phillies prioritized re-signing Aaron Nola, and they did. Specifically, he signed a seven-year, $172 million contract in November. They wanted Nola back because they had arguably baseball’s best rotation in 2023. In sum, he posted an MLB-best 17.7 fWAR. The Phils took a run at Yoshinobu Yamamoto in December. But he accepted a $325 million deal from the Dodgers.

Other than that, the Phillies have been focused on building depth in the bullpen and rotation. However, with players who are not expected to make the 26-man roster. The Phillies fell short of a World Series title in each of the last two seasons, but they have decided to run it back with mostly the same 26-man roster.

Certainly, the status quo isn’t inherently a bad thing. Not when the team came a Game 7 away from repeating as National League champions. There wasn’t much the Phillies had to do this winter. However, they checked off the biggest priority in retaining Nola. There are still spots here and there on this roster that could use supplementing (the bench and the bullpen, most notably). Still, Philadelphia lingers as a possible player for some of the bigger free agents who remain unsigned. Philadelphia ranks 7th for MLB payroll.

Last season, the Phillies did not offer much value on the moneyline and busted plenty of bankrolls on the run line. Following two playoff appearances, Philadelphia will be a popular team in the casual sector.
