Kentucky Derby odds list Todd Pletcher’s Eskendereya as the favorite for the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1st. Pletcher could have as many as six horses in the Kentucky Derby betting field as he looks to break an 0 for 24 in the big race.
Kentucky Derby odds will favor Eskendereya and for good reason. He is probably the best horse Pletcher has ever taken to the Derby. Pletcher has had a lot of different horse over the years and this year he has six horses who have won more than $2.7 million combined this season. He has a wide variety of horses as well. Some like synthetics while others like the dirt. Some are speed horses while others are closers. And he has Eskendereya who can do it all. “He has all the tools that you would like,’’ said Pletcher. “That’s the thing that’s exciting about him. We’ve been very confident all along that he wants to run the distance of the classic races. He has tremendous natural stamina. He’s a physically strong horse. He holds up to his races. He eats well. He’s got all the right tools.’’
Eskendereya won his last two races a total of 18 1/4 lengths. “We’ve never had a horse that could handle the mile and a quarter, and we’ve never had one put together a couple of preps like this one,’’ Pletcher said, “We’ve had some good prep wins, but none as impressive as these two. He ran as well as he did in the Fountain of Youth. The difference was that Johnny (Velazquez) took care of him from the eighth-pole to the wire. He couldn’t have been more professional.’’
Pletcher has his best chance ever to get a win in Kentucky Derby odds. If it is not Eskendereya it could be Mission Impazible, who is No. 7 in graded earnings. Pletcher also has Super Saver, Discreetly Mine and he might have Interactif as well. His best chance though of winning the Derby is with Eskendereya. The horse could be the biggest favorite in Kentucky Derby in a long time. In fact, he might even go off as a shorter price than Big Brown did two years ago when he won the Derby. Eskendereya might be so heavily favored that only one or perhaps two other horses will have single digit odds.
