Kentucky Derby Betting 2018 Top Contenders

Kentucky Derby Betting Preview

A long shot Kentucky Derby betting winner remains the exception rather than the rule.  Mine That Bird immediately comes to mind as a 50/1 winner in 2009.  Animal Kingdom paid 20/1 as the 2011 winner.  But more often than not one of the betting favorites ends up in the Winner’s Circle.  There is an attractive list of top contenders for the Blanket of Roses in 2018.  A total of seven horses are currently at 10/1 or better as the choice to win on Derby Day.

Bolt D’oro opened as the Kentucky Derby Betting favorite at 4/1.  Good Magic was the second choice at 6/1.  The third choice is Mask at 7/1.  McKinzie and Montauk opened as 17/2 selections.  Opening at 10/1 were Ax Man and Catholic Boy. Two potentially strong longshots at 25/1 are Instilled Regard and is Solomini.  Vino Rosso may bring enhanced value at 20/1.  Flameaway may be the top longshot at 40/1.  Avery Island is another potential surprise at 12/1.  Bravazo is a new sensation that will be bet down from his 100/1 open.

An intense one-two rivalry between Good Magic and Bolt D’oro is brewing.  The two Derby favorites last met in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile last November.  The betting public has not forgotten.  And plenty of debate surrounds the pair.  Good Magic is trained by Chris Brown with Jose Ortiz as the jockey.  Brown trained 2017 Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing.  It was the first Triple Crown win in Brown’s career.  He has had tremendous success in the Breeders Cup with a total of ten wins.  In 2016 Brown was named Eclipse Award winner as outstanding trainer.  The 24 year old Ortiz is a 2017 Eclipse Award winning jockey.  He was the top winning North American Jockey in 2016.  Last year he was the top earning jockey in the United States.  Ortiz rode Tapwrit to victory in the 2017 Belmont Stakes.  Bolt D’oro became a favorite after winning the Front Runner Stakes last September.  He was favored to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November of last year.  In fact, he was bet all the way to 3/5 from a 9/5 open.  But from the start the race proved difficult.  After being pushed to the outside Bolt D’oro was blocked much of the way.  The bad start proved to be too much to overcome.  After the third place finish jockey Corey Nakatani was fired.  Javier Castellano gets the mount.  Mick Ruis is the owner and trainer.

Bravazo may provide big value for horse players looking for a potential online sportsbook longshot.  Bravazo opened at 100/1 but is climbing.  Veteran trainer D. Wayne Lucas knows the ropes of Churchill Downs.  Lucas has four Kentucky Derby wins in his career.  In four career starts Bravazo has a 2-1-1 record.  He has $250,000 in earnings.  A win by Bravazo in the Risen Star on February 17th bignited plenty of Derby futures wagers.

Race to Watch

The 2018 Kentucky Derby is shaping up as a potential rivalry between Bold D’oro and Good Magic.  It shapes up as a classic Kentucky Derby betting showdown.

Kentucky Derby Betting Odds Picks

Good Magic rates a lot of respect for the Breeders Cup win last November.   Bolt D’oro may end up being an overlay.  Good Magic offers proven results and better value.
