Kentucky Derby odds on horses from Dubai have not been on the Kentucky Derby betting board since 2002. That changes this year as Godolphin Racing has two horses, Desert Party and Regal Ransom in Kentucky Derby odds. What are the chances that either of these two horses wins the Kentucky Derby?
Kentucky Derby odds tell us that neither Desert Party nor Regal Ransom is that highly regarded coming into this year’s race. That doesn’t mean they can’t win though since this year’s Kentucky Derby betting field is much more wide open than the past couple of years. Godolphin Racing had horses in Kentucky Derby odds from 1999-2002 but had no success, losing those four years. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum had had the goal of winning the Kentucky Derby but he didn’t even have a horse the last six years. This year the Sheikh has two horses that seem to have made the trip from Dubai to Kentucky successfully and have a chance in Kentucky Derby odds. Desert Party worked 5 furlongs in :59 3/5 while Regal Ransom had a bullet work in :59 1/5.
Some Kentucky Derby betting experts believe this is Sheik Mohammed’s best chance to win a Derby. Godolphin first came on the scene in Kentucky Derby betting in 1999 but saw Worldly Manner finish 7th. The next year in Kentucky Derby odds they had China Visit and Curule run sixth and seventh. In 2001 it was Express Tour finishing 8th and in 2002 it was Essence of Dubai finishing 9th in Kentucky Derby odds.
Looking at Godolphin Racing’s two horses in Kentucky Derby odds we see that Regal Ransom won the UAE Derby in his last race but he did not do well in the United States finishing eighth in the Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita before running in Dubai. Desert Party won the Sanford at Saratoga but was sixth in the Hopeful. He beat Regal Ransom twice in Dubai before finishing second in the UAE Derby. “I think what we have this year is much better than what we saw in the past,” said Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin’s trainer.
Desert Party is likely to go off at Kentucky Derby odds around 15-1. Regal Ransom is likely to go off at Kentucky Derby odds even higher, probably over 20-1. In this year’s race though, those Kentucky Derby odds have a chance to be a winner.
