You could say many things about the PGA Tour but, boring isn’t one of them and true to form the 2010 PGA Championship betting action was perhaps the wildest ride of them all. With windy weather and bunkers seemingly everywhere the players had plenty of hazards to contend with this year and in the end the player that hoisted the trophy was about as improbable a winner as you could imagine, but that’s the type of year it was on the Tour.
Entering the PGA Championship betting action Martin Kaymar wasn’t even on most golf fans’ radars and he certainly didn’t show up as a serious contender on the list of PGA Championship odds. But by Sunday evening in Wisconsin he had not only captured his first win on the PGA Tour but he’s also captured his first Major victory, something that will instantly catapult him to the top tier of competition and distinguish his career in the sporting history books.
But it was no foregone conclusion heading into the fourth and final round on Sunday as there were at least half a dozen players that looked at one time or another they would capture the 2010 PGA Championship title before self-destructing on one hole another.
For most of the day, right up until the final hole of play actually, it looked as if Dustin Johnson would finally win his first Major after imploding at the British Open after entering the final day of play with a comfortable lead. But then came the 18th hole and the grounding of his club in a makeshift bunker which earned him a penalty and tie for third place rather than a spot in the three hole playoff.
Kaymar defeated runner up Bubba Watson and became the third first-time winner of a Major tournament this year. Only Phil Mickelson, who won the Masters in Augusta in April, had won a Major prior to his win this year.
As has been the case since Thanksgiving of last year, Tiger Woods struggle mightily clubbing brilliant shots at times, only to be held back equally with awful shots the next swing. He is currently in the longest Major drought of his career and has plenty of work to do this offseason to regain his once legendary form.
