Blue Bombers Favored for Grey Cup 3-Peat in 2022 CFL

2022 Canadian Football League Grey Cup Championship

For the second consecutive time, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the CFL betting odds for the Grey Cup championship.  Winnipeg defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-25 to claim the 2021 Grey Cup.  Of course, the game was a rematch of the last Grey Cup Championship Game two years earlier.  Then, Winnipeg defeated Hamilton 33-12 to claim its first championship since 1990.  The Canadian Football League is showing impressive parity.  There were only three teams that posted losing records in the 2021 campaign.  From a gambling perspective, the CFL provides tremendous handicapping challenges and opportunities.

2022 CFL Grey Cup Championship SBG Odds Overview

Naturally, it is no surprise that Winnipeg is the sportsbook favorite for the 2022 Grey Cup Championship.  The defending champion is almost always the future’s favorite for the following season.  This trend makes for one of the great ironies in gambling.  To illuminate, futures betting is most often based on the past.  Bargain hunters are looking at the next level of teams.  Namely, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Argonauts, and Calgary Stampeders offer legitimate ability at a better price.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers +200

Last season the Winnipeg Blue Bombers finished 11-3 straight up and 8-6 against the Canadian Football lines.  However, the Blue Bombers betting value dropped dramatically in the late stages of the season.  As the squares became more enamored with the Blue Bombers, the price increased.  On the whole, Winnipeg failed to get the money in five of its last seven games.

On the whole, Winnipeg’s success can be attributed to its tremendous balance.  In 2021 the Blue Bombers had CFL metrics of 2nd for total offense, 1st for scoring offense, 1st for total defense, and 1st for points allowed.

Quarterback Zach Collaros is the 2-time championship quarterback of the Blue Bombers.  In turn, Collaros threw for 3185 yards, and 20 touchdown passes in 2021.  Collaros broke into the CFL in 2012 with the Toronto Argonauts.  Also, he was a starter for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Head coach Mike O’Shea is a CFL legend both as a player and coach.  In sum, O’Shea has a total of six Grey Cup championships as a player and coach.  He is a CFL Hall of Famer.  O’Shea has won the CFL Most Outstanding Rookie Award (1993) and Coach of the Year (2021).  He was a 4-time CFL All-Star as a player.

To summarize, O’Shea has a career record of 67-55 with two Grey Cup titles.  He took over as head coach at Winnipeg in 2014.  Accordingly, O’Shea has posted five consecutive double-digit win seasons.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats +400

It is true that Hamilton has been the Grey Cup runner-up the past two seasons.  But the Tiger-Cats haven’t hoisted the Grey Cup since 1999.  Second-year head coach Orlondo Steinauer has been an immediate success in Hamilton.  Steinauer was one of the greatest defensive players in CFL history.  He was a 6-time All-Star.  As a head coach, he was 2019 CFL Coach of the Year.
