Belmont Odds History at SBG Global

November 30th, 2010 Belmont Stakes Betting

Belmont odds history goes all the way back to 1867 for the first running of the Belmont Stakes.

The first race was actually run at Jerome Park that year as Belmont Stakes odds didn’t move to Belmont Park until 1905. Let’s look at some interesting Belmont odds history.

Belmont odds history has seen favorites win more than 40% of the time but recently it has been all about the underdogs. Upsets have been occurring in Belmont Stakes odds with regularity in recent years with sports betting favorites like Big Brown biting the dust. Those upsets have made exotic wagers like the exacta and trifecta the way to go when betting the Belmont.

Belmont odds history is probably highlighted by Secretariat who won by 31 lengths in 1973 Belmont odds. 1978 was the last time that a horse won in Belmont odds to win the Triple Crown. That was Affirmed and no other horse has pulled off the feat since.

Belmont odds in recent years at the sportsbook have seen horses trying for the Triple Crown but that will not be the case in 2009. Mine That Bird won the Derby this year while Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness. Seven times in the past 12 years horses have tried to win the Triple Crown in Belmont odds and failed. Going back to 1997 we see that Silver Charm lost, Real Quiet lost in 1998, Charismatic lost in 1999, War Emblem lost in 2002, Funny Cide in 2003, Smarty Jones in 2004 and Big Brown last year in Belmont Stakes odds.

Belmont odds history was extremely popular in 2004 when Smarty Jones lost to Birdstone. That was the year that sports betting gamblers believed the Triple Crown drought would finally end. More than 120,000 fans showed up at Belmont Park to watch and wager on Belmont odds in 2004.

Two of the past five years most people thought the Triple Crown would finally be one but Smarty Jones could not do it in 2004 and Big Brown was a bust in 2008.

Belmont odds history in 2007 saw the filly Rags to Riches win the race. It was only the third time a filly had won in the Belmont. This year Rachel Alexandra could be the fourth if she is part of the Belmont Stakes odds field.
