Once upon a time, IndyCar style open wheel racing was the king of motorsports in the United States. In those days, NASCAR was considered to be second-class. The open-wheel circuit was the crown jewel of the Indianapolis 500. Correlate that remains the biggest race of its time. Hence, it is the self-described “Biggest Spectacle in Racing.” IndyCar dominated the United States until 1996. Specifically, that is when some disgruntled teams moved to form a new circuit with CART. 2025 IndyCar Overview
Although its 2024 TV ratings were not good, IndyCar did exceptionally well for its Memorial Day Crown Jewel sportsbook event. The Indy 500 TV ratings were up significantly. Most important of all it trounced the once more popular NASCAR prime-time offering of the Coca-Cola 600. As for the rest of the year it wasn’t anything to write home about. But there is legitimate hope that the 2025 season can mark the start of a turnaround for the IndyCar series. That is because FOX, known for its long and outstanding coverage of NASCAR, is taking over as the broadcast network for the NTT IndyCar Series in 2025.
Despite the end of this open-wheel racing civil war in 2008, a full recovery has never come close to developing. IndyCar remains confused about what it wants to be. To show, it alternates between road and Grand Prix races with some traditional oval tracks.
Although the IndyCar Series is second fiddle to NASCAR in terms of motor racing in America, it is a niche sport with some diehard fans. The 2024 IndyCar season champion was Álex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, thanks to an early-season incident when series owner Roger Penske’s team was caught making illegal use of extra horsepower.
Caught and penalized for the infraction at the season opener, where Penske’s Josef Newgarden won with ease and McLaughlin placed second, the series fined Penske and stripped Newgarden and McLaughlin of their points for the first race. Credited with fourth after the Penske drivers were deleted from the results, Palou’s path toward his third IndyCar championship in four years was eased.
