Belmont Stakes wagering takes place three weeks after Preakness Stakes wagering. Oftentimes a Triple Crown will be on the line which makes for exciting Belmont Stakes odds. Let’s look at some important Belmont Stakes notes to consider for this year’s race.
Belmont wagering in 2009 will not have a Triple Crown at stake since two different horses won the first two races of the Triple Crown. The Kentucky Derby was won by Mine That Bird and he is the likely favorite this year in Belmont Stakes odds. Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness Stakes but she may not be entered in the Belmont.
Usually in Belmont wagering there is a big sports betting favorite. That was the case last year as Big Brown was heavily favored to win the race and the Triple Crown at the sportsbook. What usually happens though is that the big favorites fail in Belmont wagering. Big Brown lost and all of the horses trying for the Triple Crown since 1979 have lost in Belmont Stakes wagering.
Belmont wagering was not all about upsets. In the early 1900’s the favorites won almost all the time in Belmont Stakes odds. In fact, 19 favorites won in Belmont Stakes wagering during the early 1900’s. There were such big favorites in Belmont Stakes odds during those years that they actually cancelled show wagering a few times. There was no show wagering quite a few times in Belmont history. It happened in 1941, 1943, 1953, 1957, 1973 and 1978. That last year was when Affirmed won the Triple Crown, the last horse to accomplish that feat.
History is really interesting to look at with the Belmont. Favorites ruled the day for a long time but recently it has been longshots. Six times in the past 16 years there has been a double-digit winner in Belmont Stakes odds. Back in 1993 it was Colonial Affair winning at 13-1, Lemon Drop Kid won at 29-1 in 1999, Commendable at 18-1 in 2000, Sarava at 70-1 in 2002 (the biggest longshot winner ever), Birdstone at 36-1 in 2004 and Da’ Tara at 38-1 last year.
The 2009 Belmont Stakes will be held on Saturday, June 6th and Mine That Bird should be the favorite at the sportsbook. The question for sports betting gamblers to answer will be whether or not recent history will continue with longshots winning the race.
