According to Alexander Pope, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast,” but he must’ve not been an NFL gambling man, because hope seems to be dying fast amongst the Baltimore Ravens throng, and it doesn’t seem as if things will start looking up against the Dolphins. The Ravens last tasted victory in week 5 against the Raiders who were without Derek Carr, but that turned out, as far as Baltimore facing a backup QB, to be a fluke.

The run defense got better, that’s something, right?
The Ravens thank their god of choice for small favors, such as the fact that, as defensive tackle Brandon Williams noted, the run defense has improved from week to week. It hasn’t, mind you, improved enough, but you gotta find that silver lining. For example, Baltimore finally scored a touchdown after almost 11 quarters when receiver Chris Moore scored on the last play of Sunday’s 16-24 loss to the Vikings. Case Keenum, by the way, started under center for the Vikes, and Matt Moore could start on Thursday in lieu of the injured Jay Cutler, though that might be a case of the backup actually being better than the incumbent. The point is that the Ravens could lose back-to-back games to backups (they had previously lost to rookie Mitch Trubisky and the Chicago Bears). Baltimore is 3-4 SU and ATS this season, so losses are always double whammy for the Ravens. they are, additionally, 5-14-2 ATS in their last 21 games after a straight up loss, 7-18-2 ATS in their last 27 in October, and 2-5 ATS in their last seven on fieldturf, while the Dolphins are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in October and 12-3 ATS in their last 15 in Week 8, but have not covered the NFL gambling spread in their last seven encounters with the Ravens.

Matt Moore has, since Adam Gase took over as Dolphins head coach, 10 touchdown passes (including two on 21 attempts in Sunday’s 31-28 win against the Jets) and three interceptions with a passer rating of 105, compared to Cutler’s seven, five, and 78.7, respectively. Miami has, moreover, scored 104 points in 15 1/2 quarters with Moore under center to 75 points in 22 1/2 quarters with Cutler. It has been reported that Cutler’s job will be waiting for him until he’s healthy, but Moore isn’t, then again, tight with Gase like Cutler is, so there’s that.

The Ravens offense has scored 16 or fewer points in three of their last five games, and yet the total has gone over in their last three straight, while a Dolphins game finally went over the rainbow this season on Sunday, which was coincidentally Moore’s first action this year. Or was it a coincidence? Guess we will find out about that this Thursday night.
