UFC betting fans thought they would be in their cold, cold graves before Conor McGregor and Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather engaged in single combat. However, the matchup that seemed nothing more than the figment of a fevered imagination actually has one foot firmly placed in reality. “The McGregor side is done; I’m starting to work on the Mayweather side now,” UFC head honcho Dana White said on TNT’s postgame NBA coverage on Wednesday, suggesting that either fans who bet on UFC want to see more balls, or basketball fans want to see more fights.
This development should of course be taken with a grain of salt – or a full silo as the case may be. “I’m not saying the fight will happen,” White warned. “I’ve got one side done. Now it’s time to work on the other. If we can come to a deal with Haymon and Mayweather, the fight’s gonna happen.” And if it does happen, it would be a “straight-up boxing” match. Huh. That’s odd. Usually in champion warfare, single combat takes place in the no-man’s-land. Dana, you’re pissing all over the chivalric code. Not to mention that you’re doing ya boy no favours. Money is widely considered by many – including to fans who bet on UFC – to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. And is widely considered by most people to be a boxer, which Mac is not. Sure, Conor’s boxing skills are his forté but saying he can beat Money at his own game is like hoping Tim Tebow will become the next Mike Trout.
Expectedly, the UFC betting odds – even though speculative at the moment – are looking good for the Irish brawler. That just ain’t fair. It wouldn’t be fair to Flair, and it’s not fair to Mac. This bout should really be contested under whichever rules the Rocky vs. Thunderlips match did. Otherwise, Money could be Mac’s Clubber Lang. Conor doesn’t seem to care, though. “It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management,” Notorious told TheMacLife.com. “The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.”
Wait, is it “the most important part” because it was your part, Mac? Way to goad Money. Speaking of whom, Mayweather said on Wednesday he was awaiting information. “I have a team for [negotiating], but as soon as their side [UFC] communicates with our side, then the fight will happen.” According to White, Mac “wants to fight twice this year and one of those fights to be Floyd, if possible.” Meanwhile, “there is only one fight that makes business sense” to Mayweather. And the fight that boxing and UFC betting fans want to see is this one. Apparently, it is now only a matter of dotting the t’s and crossing the i’s for this dream match to finally happen. And it will probably be a Ragnarök-like, extinction level event.
