At the onset of the week, American League pennant futures are a two-team market at the top and a scramble after that. Tampa Bay is the slight favorite around +310, with the Yankees right behind at +325. Those prices imply roughly a quarter of the league for each club.
Overall, the Rays have the best record and the inside track on the one-seed and a first-round bye. New York has the better run differential and the brand the public still wants in October. Despite Aaron Judge’s latest injured-list trip.
With one week left, the American League pennant picture has two races still alive. And one is already decided, save for the seeding. Tampa Bay sits at 94-60 and has already booked October. In turn, the Rays lead the Yankees by five games in the East and own a magic number of four for the division and the league’s top seed. New York is 89-65 and has also clinched a playoff spot.
Correlate that the Rays and Yanks meet Tuesday through Thursday in the Bronx for four games in three days. It is the last MLB Futures odds chance for the Yankees to wreck Tampa Bay’s bye and steal the East.
Next, the Boston Red Sox are 84-71, ten and a half games back of the Rays and five ahead of the last wild-card line. That is enough to treat the second wild-card seed as all but locked. Toronto and Baltimore are three and four games out of the last wild-card spot and running out of nights.
The real pennant mess is in the middle and the West. Cleveland has taken the Central at 80-75 after a four-game winning streak, one game ahead of the White Sox at 79-76. Still, Chicago holds the season series and would win a two-team tiebreaker. Both clubs are in the playoff field if the standings freeze. But only the division winner gets a first-round bye.
Late this week, the Guardians visit Boston. It is a series that can swing both the Central and Boston’s wild-card cushion. Detroit and Minnesota are seven and eight games back and need a Sportsbook Odds collapse that is no longer realistic.
Texas leads the West at 78-77, one game up on Houston at 77-78 after the Rangers took two from Toronto this weekend and the Astros dropped a pair to Atlanta. That one-game gap is the entire division. Still, Houston has the better tiebreaker profile against several clubs. But the Rangers have the standings lead with a week to play. Seattle is six back and effectively done. If Texas holds the West, Houston falls two games behind Chicago for the last wild card. In turn, they would need the White Sox to stumble. If Houston climbs back over Texas, the Rangers drop into that same wild-card fight. Either way, one of those two .500 clubs is going to October as a division champion. While the other may not go at all.
If the season ended this morning, the MLB Future Odds Betting bracket would send the White Sox into a wild-card series at Texas. And then Boston into one at Yankee Stadium. Subsequently, the winners would meet Cleveland and Tampa Bay in the Division Series. That is the clean version.
However, the messier version is still on the schedule. Rays-Yankees for the East and the one-seed. Guardians-Red Sox for Central positioning. Astros-Mariners for Houston’s last gasp. And then Blue Jays-Orioles for two clubs that need help and a hot week. The regular season ends September 27. The wild-card round starts September 29.
