Previously, in 2020, the Clemson Tigers finished with a final national ranking of 3rd. It was the 6th consecutive season in which Clemson finished 4th or better. But since that COVID-ravaged season, Clemson had taken a step back. Before a 10-4 College Football Playoff campaign in 2024, Swinney’s program went 10-3, 11-3, and 9-4. As a result of this sports betting decline, there were harsh comments about Swinney’s refusal to embrace the transfer portal and NIL. Now that is changing.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik showed massive 2025 college football futures growth in his second full season as the starter. Over 14 games, Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns and ran for 463 yards and seven scores. The senior is among the Heisman frontrunners this fall and will benefit from the development of a promising trio of receivers. Namely, TJ Moore, Bryant Wesco, and Antonio Williams headline one of the top groups of pass catchers in the nation.

Additionally, Clemson should also have one of the nation’s top lines with four starters returning. True freshman Gideon Davidson could lead the backfield in ‘25. Meanwhile, Clemson’s defense has slipped a bit since the departure of coordinator Brent Venables to Oklahoma. Coach Dabo Swinney took steps to return the Tigers’ defense to the top of college football by hiring veteran coordinator Tom Allen away from Penn State. Allen takes over a loaded group.

Up front, TJ Parker and Peter Woods will contend for All-America honors. And then the second level is stacked with Sammy Brown and Wade Woodaz returning. Cornerbacks Avieon Terrell and Ashton Hampton and safety Khalil Barnes are back to anchor the back end.

It’s a problem to skip Stanford, Virginia, and Wake Forest in the 2025 schedule, as all three failed to get to a bowl last season. But assuming NC State bounces back, that’s a strong team to miss. Correlate that Pitt and Cal aren’t bad to have off the slate. But the big one is Miami. It’s a shame these two don’t meet again as they didn’t play last year, either.
If Clemson gets by LSU, look out. Overall, they might be one of the five-best teams in the country and should flirt with the top of the rankings for a while
