The one hundredth and forty eighth edition of the Ultimate Fighting Championships is now history. The event was held Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The much anticipated main bout pitting middleweight champ Anderson Silva and longtime nemesis Chael Sonnen went down as many had expected, although more quickly than most thought.
The last time these two met was 2010. In that bout, Sonnen dominated for the better part of four and a half rounds before Silva surprised him and the crowd watching, by applying a triangle choke that ended Sonnens hope of a victory on that night.
Saturday night, things began well once again for him as he kept Silva on the mat for most of the first round. Then things turned quickly and it took Silva just 1:55 into the second round to dispose of Sonnen. Check the UFC Odds on Faber vs. Barao.
Sonnen was the one trying to end things early, when he attempted a fierce rotating back fist, but missed, landing on the canvas and up against the fence. Silva literally jumped on the opportunity, and Sonnen's chest with his knee, pummeling him with strike after strike until the referee had to step in and end the punishment.
Silva has now been successful 10 times defending his title and has been victorious in his last 15 UFC fights overall. His career record is 32-4. Sonnen leaves with a 27-12-1 record.
In other bouts, Forrest Griffin defeated Tito Ortiz in a close one featuring the two, one time light heavyweight champions. Griffin received a unamious decision by the judges.
