NFL Preseason Betting Week 3: Giants vs. Jets

New York, New York indeed. Big Apple fans who like to bet on NFL will be torn when it comes to choosing between the Giants and the Jets when the two teams clash on Saturday, August 27th at MetLife Stadium (where else?). Or not. Either way, it is as good a chance as any to place an online NFL bet.

Giants -1½ (-110) 42½ (-110)
Jets +1½ (-110) 42½ (-110)

The New York Giants have lost their two preseason games, most recently a 0-21 shutout loss to the Buffalo Bills. Starting QB Eli Manning and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made their preseason debuts, but the Giants actually played worse than they did in their 10-27 preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. Brother Eli completed 4 of 9 passes for 44 yards in four series, in which the Giants combined for 33 yards of offense and one first down.

Meanwhile, Beckham had one catch for 33 yards, and was targeted three times. Moreover, backup QB Ryan Nassib was sacked by CB Sterling Moore and lost a fumble as a result. Nassib missed his first seven attempts before finding rookie tight end Jerell Adams for an 8-yard completion to open his 8th series. Nassib went 2 of 12 for 25 yards. Finally, third-tier QB Logan Thomas threw two interceptions.

The New York Jets also kind of let down their fans who bet on NFL. After beating the Jaguars 17-13, they went on to lose 18-22 to the Redskins. Undrafted rookie Robby Anderson made six catches for 131 yards, hauled in a 50-yard pass from third-string QB Bryce Petty, and made a 42-yard touchdown catch. CB Darrelle Davis left his mark as well, picking off McCoy in the end zone during the Redskins’ opening drive. Additionally, starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 4 of 9 for 35 yards, while running back Bilal Powell ran for 23 yards on three carries. Nevertheless, the Redskins came from behind to win the game.

The Giants and the Jets squared off against one another two times last year; one time in the preseason (as is customary) and the other in the regular season – and both were losing efforts for the former. On August 29th, the Jets beat the Giants 28-18 when Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes and CB Antonio Cromartie – now with the Colts – scored on a 59-yard interception return in the dying seconds of the first half. And on December 6th, the Jets lost once again, this time 20-23.

And once again Fitzpatrick made a huge difference, leading the Jets from a 10-point deficit in the final 4:24 of regulation, and hitting wide receiver Brandon Marshall for a 9-yard TD with 27 seconds left to tie the proceedings and sending the game into overtime – where a 31-yard field goal by placekicker Randy Bullock gave the Jets the victory. People who bet on NFL might find it ironic that Bullock is currently with the Giants, having just signed with the other New York team on August 22nd.
