NFL Betting – Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers

NFL betting odds for Week 1 of the 2008 regular season have the Pittsburgh Steelers favored over the Houston Texans. The Steelers are thought to be one of the top teams in the AFC, even though they have the toughest schedule in the league. NFL Odds Week 1 numbers have the Steelers as a 6.5 point football betting favorite over the Texans with a total of 43.5.

NFL betting on Pittsburgh should be popular this season as many people believe the Steelers can be Super Bowl contenders. Pittsburg was 10-6 straight up last season and 8-8 against the NFL betting pointspread. The Steelers were 5-3 versus the football betting number at home. The Steelers have exciting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and running back Willie Parker on offense. Last year before suffering a season ending injury, Parker was leading the league in rushing according to NFL betting numbers.

He also has a backup this season in rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall from Illinois. Pittsburgh will look to improve upon their offensive numbers from last year, as they were only 17th in the league according to NFL betting stats. What could hurt the Steelers is the loss of Pro Bowl offensive lineman Alan Faneca who signed with the Jets. Pittsburgh had a great defense a year ago. They were exceptional at home where they allowed just 11.6 points per game according to NFL betting numbers.

Houston is making progress under head coach Gary Kubiak. Last season the Texans finished 8-8 straight up and 8-7-1 against the football pointspread. The problem last season for Houston was the defense that ranked 19th against the run and 25th against the pass according to football betting stats.

NFL numbers show that Houston was not a good road team last season. They were just 2-6 against the NFL betting pointspread on the road in 2007, including 2-5 against the NFL betting pointspread as an underdog. The Steelers were 5-3 against the NFL spread at home last season. Since Houston became the Texans franchise, the teams have met only twice according to NFL numbers. That happened in 2002 and 2005. The game in 2002 was won by Houston 24-6 while the Steelers won 27-7 in 2005. Both of those games went under the NFL betting total.
