Since being founded in 1959 Sunland Park has made great strides. Sunland Park races are simulcast into over 600 locations around the world.
Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s a lot of racing talent went through Sunland. Stars like Winsham Lad, Fast Gas, Prince Astro and others went through Sunland.

In 1980 the Riley Alison Futurity winner was Bold Ego who went on to finish 2 nd in the 1981 Preakness. Jockeys Jerry Bailey, Patrick Valenzuela, Cash Asmussen and Mike Smith all started at Sunland Park . Trainers Bob Baffert and D. Wayne Lukas each won Quarter Horse races at Sunland early in their careers.
