Breeders Cup Odds – Another Upset in the Classic?

The Breeders Cup Classic is the most popular race and the one that gets the bulk of the attention in Breeders Cup odds.

This year the Classic is going to get an extreme amount of attention with the unbeaten Zenyatta looking to end her career with a perfect record.  Could Zenyatta lose in the Classic in a major online gambling upset?

Big Favorite – There is not much doubt that Zenyatta is going to be the favorite in the Classic at the Sbg sportsbook and she could be a big favorite. The only other horse who might get some action is Lookin at Lucky.  What does history tell us about a big favorite in the Classic with no other real contenders?

History – The Classic is usually a very competitive betting race, but not always.  Sometimes you get the big favorite and no other real challenger.  How have the big favorites done in this situation in online gambling?  There have been six occasions where you had a big favorite and in five of those races an upset happened.  The great Cigar lost in 1996 at odds of 3-5.  19-1 long shot Alphabet Soup upset the Hall of Fame horse in the Classic.  Cigar was the odds-on favorite and the next horse in the betting was 7-1.  Cigar ended up finishing third in that Classic.  In 1984 it was Slew o’ Gold going off at 3-5 but he lost as 31-1 long shot Wild Again was the winner. It has only been two years ago when Curlin lost as the 4-5 favorite.  He was beaten by Raven’s Pass who went off at 13-1. Curlin was a huge favorite in the betting and had the biggest difference as the second choice was 8-1.  In 2006 it was Bernardini going off at 6-5 and losing to Invasor who was 6-1.  Going back to 2000 it was Fusaichi Pegasus who went off at 6-5 and lost to Tiznow at odds of 9-1.

Look for a Price – There is no doubt you are going to want to bet Zenyatta in Breeders Cup odds. And yes, she may win. But there is a lot of value in the Breeders Cup Classic.  You should be able to find an excellent horse at a great price.
